Recommendations: What do you use on Android?
« on: November 01, 2018, 01:50:02 AM »
First, I beg the mods' forgiveness, as this is clearly not a technical question and does not seem to meet the elucidated requirements for any of the topics on this forum. That said, I'm very curious about the insights users of this forum might have.

Since Rockbox as an app will not run on a modern Android smartphone (barring what looks like extraordinary effort working with a chinese language build), what audio apps do people who are aware of/have experienced Rockbox's awesomeness choose to use as an alternative?

I'm not hardcore enough carry a standalone player around with me in addition to my phone. But I'd be interested to know if that's what folks are doing. I've taken Neutron, Rocket Player & foobar2000 for a spin and all are serviceable but not completely satisfying.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Ah, I was hoping there were some decent instructions somewhere for getting Rockbox on Android. I tried following the AndroidPort 'Procedure for installation from source' and didn't get very far. Was searching for the forums to see if anyone else had grappled with this. What a shame! Is anyone working on a novice user install?

Rockbox doesn't work on ART runtime and it is not easy to fix it.

I've tried several over the years but am now using Musicolet. It's small, lightweight, has customizable layouts, decent feature set, works with Android Auto, and importantly is ad-free and doesn't want to creep on you with ridiculous permissions requests. I really recommend it.

The only thing I don't like is how it treats artists prefixed with "The", i.e. "The Ramones." Instead of alphabetizing that artist under "R", the app alphabetizes it under "T." It's something that all other music apps know not to do but, until the developer fixes it, you either have to re-edit all your tags to make "The" a suffix i.e., "Ramones, The" or suffer through unnecessary scrolling. It's a problem with things like Android Auto because Android Auto will lock you out of inputting more touches (i.e., scrolling, tapping) for several seconds to force you to look at the road before unlocking again to let you scroll further.

Android Auto is your smart driving companion that helps you stay focused, connected, and entertained with the Google Assistant. With a simplified interface, large buttons, and powerful voice actions, Android Auto is designed to make it easier to use apps that you love from your phone while you’re on the road.

Yes, it works with the Android Auto app that you can install on your phone and it also works with the Android Auto systems that are built-in to a lot of cars now.
