Cowon iAudio X5l accidentally deleted root files
« on: August 26, 2018, 08:15:32 AM »
Hello, support forum

Was just trying uninstall Rockbox from my iAudio X5L, and ended up formatting (and so accidentally deleting all files from) the entire drive. Downloaded the firmware again, but it doesn't seem to install. When I switch on the device, the screen just hangs on the iAUDIO screen, and freezes. Have also tried to reinstall Rockbox using the automated installer, but that hasn't worked either. Any tips or advice hugely appreciated.

Hello galavant, nice to still see some X5 users today :-)
Is the drive formatted to FAT32? Try to install the original firmware first and then use Rockbox utility. Check the manual for a proper installation. If you want to boot Rockbox with a short power slide check: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,51428.0.html

Thank you, cerial killer

Thing is, I've followed the instructions, in that I've copied the **.bin file to a folder marked 'firmware' in the root folder, and restarted with the power cable plugged in, but it still won't boot or update. I think the problem is that I formatted the entire drive (in FAT32), which may have wiped some essential services from the drive, which aren't included in the firmware 'updates' found online. Anychance of anyone having a clone of the original root files...?

Best

When I changed the HDD of my X5L I just formatted the drive to FAT32 (and to be sure to correctly format it, I didn't use Windows, but Linux), created a folder called FIRMWARE on the disk and copied the x5_fw.bin file there. After plugging the charger in, the firmware update process finished successfully. Can't image, what you have done wrong.
But I uploaded the original root files from the latest firmware (v.2.10E) plus the firmware itself and the manual. As I don't have an other opportunity to upload files, I use a free file hoster, so beware where you click and don't download a *.exe file. Use an ad blocker!

Hope you can fix your X5.
