iPod 5.5 Checksum Error

(1/1)

shrustimendonza:
Today I tried to update rockbox on my 5.5 Gen iPod Video with an upgraded SSD. It's always been working fine, even since I changed the SSD, about a year ago.

I haven't really used it much in the last few months, but a couple of weeks back I took it out of my drawer and tried to listen to one song. I looked for the artist in the database and selected the song, but the iPod started reproducing another song (from another artist altogether). I shrugged it off as a mistake, and gave up.

Today, after trying the update via the Utility, I now get this screen every time I try rebooting the device: http://imgur.com/a/4L7yp

Can anyone help? I tried removing rockbox and reinstalling. Nothing. I installed iTunes, and went on with the restore. That doesn't work either! Even after I restore, the iPod keeps just rebooting to that screen, and the rockbox folder and music files in it are not deleted. Not even the Windows formatting option works. In short, my iPod seems absolutely bricked.

What's going on? Is this a catastrophic SSD failure? Is it possible? I thought that SSDs are not supposed to fail! It's got barely one year of life!

Thanks!

Reboot into disk mode and check the disk for errors. Then put a new .rockbox folder on.

One thing to try is to remove the SSD and put it in an external enclosure (USB3 or connected directly to the motherboard via sata, USB2 doesn't seem to work) then reformat it and start again.

Edit - not sure the 5.5 ipod gives sufficient level of disk access to be able to fix corrupted SSDs without taking them out and connecting them more directly.  The Ipod classic doesn't, the 5th gen maybe does, don't know about the 5.5 gen, which seems to be sort-of in between the two.

Also could try AOMEI disk partition software, both with the ipod and with external enclosure.

And finally if you do remove it, might not even require complete reformat, just rewriting the MBR might be enough.
