With blank storage there won't be anything on the iPod, so you'll need to restore and reinstall.

However, people sometimes report instability using those adapters with rockbox, so you may want to stick with the Apple firmware after modding.

If the bootloader is already installed, isn't it enough to format the SSD to FAT32 and just copy a Rockbox build onto it?

Doesn't he need to restore to have dual boot working?

I think I swapped the harddrive of my iPod 6G with a new one, that I just formatted to FAT32. I also had Rockbox installed previously. When I powered the iPod on, Rockbox bootloader complained about a missing rockbox.ipod(?) file and i just copied a fresh build over and everything worked. But I might confuse something, due to a lot harddrive replacements recently.
