A tool that can be used in USB mode to delete all files on an MP3 player?
« on: May 04, 2018, 11:29:11 AM »
Hi, everybody,

I've big troubles with my Cowon J3 player. The player freezes on starting.
PC does not recognize the player as USB-Flash Drive. Only Boot-Mode works for
tcctool. But after Firmware-Update player hangs at start again.

Does anyone know a tool to use in the USB boot mode, delete all files on a USB
flash memory (Flash EEPROM?), so that the player starts normally again?
Or does one have to "unscrew" the player, to make a "Hard Reset"?

I would be very grateful if someone could help me!
 :)

I believe the J3 uses a tcc processor. The storage on those was never reverse engineered so no tools exist that can write to the flash memory. The only thing that can do that is the original firmware.

Since rockbox never supported the J3, this is a bad place to ask how to fix one. I believe people elsewhere on the internet figured out how to get tcctool working on the J3. You should see if you can find any of those old discussions.

Dear Saratoga,

Many thanks for your response! Surprisingly, I could actually solve the problem
solve with TCCTool, after which it with the current firmware 2.29 of the Cowon J3
did not work, I simply tried out of desperation with TCCTOOL to import the firmware
predecessor version 2.2.8 and behold, the player boots again!   :)

(Although TCCTool indicates that the firmware 2.28 is successfully installed,
the player continues the version 2.29 displays. Apparently there is no downgrade
option on the Cowon J3. Nevertheless it helps!  :D)
Thank you for the hint, TCCTool try again. It's a nice Tool!  8)

regards.
