iPod 5.5 - Prevent Unit From Turning On
« on: March 20, 2018, 01:52:07 AM »
Is there a way to prevent the unit from turning on and booting to the Apple firmware when plugging in a LOD or charging cable? My unit keeps turning on when the LOD is knocked by something and it boots to the Apple firmware which is both annoying a waste of battery life.
Thanks in advance!

I assume you mean this happens when you connect it while the hold switch is on? I also found that very annoying. The Rockbox bootloader does that, and my solution was to install an altered version of the bootloader which doesn't use the hold switch for that. You can then still boot into the original firmware using the MENU button. Simply press and hold MENU to power on and boot. Once you see that you're booting into OF you can let it go. Here is the patch I use: https://github.com/dreamlayers/rockbox/commit/d6e924459cff604dddb3dd6f69ab462794aef427

This doesn't prevent turning on, and instead boots into Rockbox even though the hold switch is on. I think that's probably good enough for what you want.

Edit: If you boot into Rockbox with the hold switch on, it will reset settings. So, this other patch is needed: https://github.com/dreamlayers/rockbox/commit/9ae17d6bb2736ad984da6cb5ee02b78e022667f6 . I also keep a copy of config.cfg in the root directory as a backup just in case.

Hi dreamlayers,

I've been struggling with the same issue as apita1911 myself, though my iPod is a 7th gen classic. It's frustrating because it will often need reformatted when it does so and like he says it eats the battery a bit quicker (though my battery life is oddly low to begin with, likely due to the fact that I installed an SSD).

Anyway, I'm mainly here to ask exactly how to install the patches in the first place asI can't seem to figure it out. Would you be able to provide any help, or possibly a page that would contain the instructions to do so? I have the two files downloaded but I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to go next.

Thank you!
