~Failing screen connector on Sansa Clip Zip? And: how to turn on voice UI?
« on: December 13, 2017, 05:58:47 PM »
Hello all. I have a SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip, running Rockbox 3.13 (I was hesistant to upgrade to 3.14 because my Clip Zip might be showing signs of flash failure, but that's for another topic...). A little over a week ago the screen started going off (though in a completelly dark room I noticed that it isn't actually completely off, jusr very, very dark ~grey) ...pushing on the case just below the screen seemed to fix it (is that where the screen connector is located / is it possible that it became partially detached or ~corroded?). However, the fix stopped working today...

What's strange, is that the screen DOES still work when the player is connected to a laptop or USB charger (albeit in the latter case, with strange ~interference / scrolling "scanlines" of sort, coming I guess from 50 Hz AC ...it's a cheap charger, it cost less than 1€), though it's dimmer and with slightly strange colours.

Can I have any hope of somehow repairing it? (hm, I don't even see a way to open the Zip, no screws... :/ )

Related: I understand Rockbox has a voice UI for the blind, that could be a sort of fix for my problem ...however I'm unable to turn it on.  In Settings->General Settings->Voice there's a position "Voice Menus" which was on by default... I also tried to turn on "Voice directories" and "Voice filenames" to no effect. :/

2 weeks have passed, and at least the situation is somewhat stable: display works (though dimly) when the Sansa is charging... I suppose I could use a powerbank to operate the player mostly normally when out. :/

But from lack of replies, should I understand that the issue is uncommon, with unknown permanent fix? :( And what's the trick with voice UI?...

Have you read
https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/VoiceHowto ?

you have to download the voice file (or generate it with Rockbox Utility) and copy it to the langs folder.
