This right here says it probably isn't a fake, but the thing about fake cards is they use blocks on the card deemed unstable/unusable; Now do sd cards go bad? Yes.
Could it be related to upgrading? highly doubtful.
Your best bet at this point is probably to do some testing of that card check bad blocks and use that program johnb linked
On a side note.. I assume you are safely removing the device ( clicking safely remove/eject...) and have you tried a dedicated sd card reader?

A fake is usually a 4 or 8gb die with the firmware hacked so that it identifies as a bigger card. There is also special handling of writes beyond the true capacity so that the file allocation table doesn't get corrupted and the user hopefully doesn't notice.
If its a bad card there should be lots of corrupted files. If its a fake, some files will secretly not be written but the file system should be free of errors.
