Can't Keep Songs When USB Unplugged
« on: November 18, 2017, 06:00:26 PM »
have a Sanza Clip Zip and just updated to 3.14.  Now when I connect and transfer an album of songs over to my microdisc, it shows they are on the disc but when I disconnect the player from the computer and go to the songs, only 3 have been transferred to the player.  Not sure if maybe my microdisc needs to be reformatted because of the firmware upgrade, I need help.  The songs that were transferred when I had 3.13 are all still there, it's just when I try putting any new stuff on, it only transfers 2 or three songs onc the player is unplugged!

Did you buy the sd card online, and if so are you sure it isn't counterfeit?  Usually a card that lets you write to it but doesn't retain files after a certain number of writes if counterfeit.

it's A 64gb Sandisc micro card, been using it for 3 years with no issues.  Just before I updated to 3.14 I used it an it worked fine, so it is definitely because of the update. I'm baffled, because when I put it on the card through the Sanza Clip Zip and play it on the computer, all the files are there, but when I unplug it from the computer only about 2 or three songs remain when I check it after I disconnect the USB cable.  like about 70mb of data...

Sandisk cards are the most commonly counterfeited.  First verify that the card actually works in another device.  There are tools you can get online for testing if a card is real as well that write data, then read it back to see if it was really stored or not.

If it is real, I can try and find some older builds for you to try.

It's real, not a fake, and I confirmed that it is working fine and as it should.  Can I go back to 3.13 firmware easily?

Thanks

Yes you can just download and install that build.  You can also try this build which is midway between 3.13 and 3.14:

Looks like I should have taken out my Micro SD Card before updating, as the update seems to have done something to the card, I put another card of the same make and model from the same place in the player and all is working now

Updating won't do anything to the card.

Delete all data on the SD and then run this tool
https://www.heise.de/download/product/h2testw-50539
to verify the true amount of storage that is writable and readable -> genuine or fake

it's A 64gb Sandisc micro card, been using it for 3 years with no issues.

This right here says it probably isn't a fake, but the thing about fake cards is they use blocks on the card deemed unstable/unusable; Now do sd cards go bad? Yes.

Could it be related to upgrading? highly doubtful.

Your best bet at this point is probably to do some testing of that card check bad blocks and use that program johnb linked

On a side note.. I assume you are safely removing the device ( clicking safely remove/eject...) and have you tried a dedicated sd card reader?

A fake is usually a 4 or 8gb die with the firmware hacked so that it identifies as a bigger card. There is also special handling of writes beyond the true capacity so that the file allocation table doesn't get corrupted and the user hopefully doesn't notice.

If its a bad card there should be lots of corrupted files. If its a fake, some files will secretly not be written but the file system should be free of errors.
