Running DOOM on Sansa clip v1
« on: October 27, 2017, 02:51:31 PM »
Hello all
Does anyone know how to port DOOM to the Sandisk Sansa Clip V.1? Ive gotten rockbox running on it, however when ive tried putting the WAD file, along with RockDoom on, nothing happened. Im not sure if i am missing a plugin or if it wont work. I have seen it done all over YouTube and i am trying to do it as a high school project. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

The Clip v1 isn't supported. Feel free to try and make it work.

With only 2 MB of RAM I don't think doom is possible.

saratoga, PlayStation 1 also has only 2 MiB of RAM, and it does have a nice Doom port... ;P (allright, it also has additional 1 MiB of video RAM and 0.5 MiB of sound RAM ...but OTOH Sansa Clip v1 is monochromatic and has much lower resolution, so "textures" (or whatever the surfaces are called within the scope of Doom engine) can be much smaller)

The PS1 port you mention was the result of 6 continuous months of work by multiple paid developers. Surely it'd be possible to get something resembling doom on the clipv1 -- it's been done on the Commodore VIC-20 with 4K of RAM -- but that doesn't mean someone will do it.

Aye, that's largely why I ended the main sentence of my post with ";P" :P

I mean the current doom plugin, you are welcome to write a new one if you like that is designed to fit into very small memory devices.

Unfortunatelly, I can't code (I only had brief exposure to C 15 years ago, it was "long ago and not true" and I have forgotten everything). But I plan on changing that, so who knows perhaps one day I'll be able to contribute to Rockbox...
