Hi,
I'd like to try to do this, but I'm a woman in my late 50s and so I haven't grown up with this kind of technology. I'm not afraid to have a go, and I've been using computers for 20 years at home, but if anybody has the patience to just check that I've understood the instructions properly (below) I'd be very grateful. The Walkman was expensive and I don't want to brick it by doing things wrong because I'm guessing what to do. When I installed Rockbox on my Sansa Clips the process simpler, so this is a bit of a leap for me.
I'm looking at this page:
https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/SonyNWLinuxPort, and it looks to me as though it's telling me to do the following.
1. Download a prebuilt install from the 'dev builds' page (
https://build.rockbox.org/).
Even at this early stage in the instructions I'm unsure about what to do, because at the top of that page it says that those builds are not yet stable, and that they may be buggy or even unusable. There is a link at the top of the page to the latest stable release, but (following that link) the Release Notes page (
https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/ReleaseNotes314) doesn't list the E580 as a supported device.
This is what I had in mind when I asked whether it was now possible to put Rockbox on my E585. I should really have asked whether there is now a stable release available for the E585. If anyone knows I'd be grateful if they could tell me. I'd be happy to go ahead if everyone who has tried has been successful, even though it isn't formally listed yet as a supported device on the Stable Release page. I understand that there is always some risk involved

2. Assuming it's safe to proceed with the prebuilt install, am I right in thinking I should unzip it to This PC\Walkman(G:)\? (G: is the Walkman drive on my PC since I switched the Walkman to MSC mode via Device Manager.)
3. The instructions page then seems to me to tell me to install the Bootloader firmware by following the Windows instructions shown on that page. I don't know what is meant by "run the tool as root or using sudo" though, and I don't understand the reference to "use whatever terminal emulator your linux distribution provides".
4. Towards the bottom of the Windows Instructions it tells me to download scsitool and open a command prompt in the download directory. I'm planning to use the .bat file linked to on the instructions page.
I'm hoping that if I complete the Windows Instructions then I'll have done it all right. Can anyone please confirm, or point out where I've misunderstood?
Many thanks if you've read this far. At this point I'm wondering whether perhaps I might still be able to install the 'latest stable realease' from this page (
https://www.rockbox.org/download/) because it refers to downloading and running the Rockbox Utility, which is what I've successfully done several times when installing on Sansa Clips. If anyone knows then please let me know!
Many thanks,
Shirley
