Original firmware problems
« on: July 08, 2006, 02:15:19 PM »
In the past, I've been able to use both rockbox and the original Apple firmware without problems. In other words, aside from using rockbox, I can still load the original firmware to sync with iTunes.

Now, I updated my nano to 1.2. Of course, rockbox got deleted, so I have to re-install rockbox. Once I got rockbox installed, whenever I switch back to the original firmware, the nano looks like it has nothing in it. iTunes syncs just fine, but my nano shows empty tracks, as if I didn't put any songs in it. iTunes shows the tracks, but no the nano.

What's going on? Is this because of 1.2? Or the latest rockbox build? Help.

Reverting back to 1.1.1 returns everything to normal. So, could it be the latest Apple firmware 1.2 has some problems with rockbox's bootloader? I mean it boots just fine, but it cannot see its own tracks/iTunes database.

Does anyone else have any insight?  I ahve the same problem with version 1.2 of the apple firmware.  Unfortunately, switching back to 1.1.1 won't help because i bought the IPod+Nike jogging thing which is only suppored by 1.2 firmware.

Any ideas?

thanks!

At the moment it seems like 1.2 has some change that prevents it from working with our bootloader.

If it's accidental, in time we should be able to resolve it. If it's intentional, it's *possible* that we won't be able to easily, depending on what they've done.

I think it would be a good idea to put a notice on the IpodInstallation wiki page to warn people about this - I had cleverly updated my nano without knowing about this, and spent some time reloading music and wondering why it doesn't appear...  ::)

There should also be a link to this thread to give those who have already performed the update a way out.

Oh ya, for some reason, the standard way of "downgrading" the ipod to fool the older updater doesn't work. It's due to a blank SysInfo file.

This blank SysInfo file also affects ipodLinux - not too sure if all the changes are "accidental" now...will have to be wary of future updates.

I'm not sure if posting links to older firmware has any legal ramifications, but if not, I would be happy to update the IpodInstallation page :)

So is this update to the apple firmware available for the 5g iPod Video?

If I plug my iPod into iTunes it won't try to automatically update, will it?

The latest fw version for the iPod Video is 1.1.2, and afaik, it's not affected by this problem.

If you're on windows, it should not auto update. unless you specifically go and download the updater. For Mac, I believe that the update will be downloaded when you do a "Software Update" for the whole computer.

In any case, the updater will make it very obvious that it's going to do something, so no worries about invisible updates happening ;)

It only affects the Nano with firmware 1.2.

Is there another solution? Unfortunately I don't have the firmware 1.1.1 :(
