Clip+: reboots on audio file access
« on: June 23, 2017, 01:37:52 PM »
Hi,

I bought a Clip+ on *bay that was already declared as defective, i.e. I was somewhat prepared, but maybe someone has any advice  if there is something I can try ...

It came with the OF and booted ok. Chkdsk reported no problems, I checked the internal drive with H2testw and it also did not find any errors.
That's when I formatted the internal drive, copied the RB bootloader (the one that Bilgus provided for booting from SD) and put the latest dev build on the internal drive.

The firmware "upgrade" worked fine and RB boots. I can browse the internal drive and an SD, if inserted. However, when I select a song, it briefly shows WPS with the tags displayed but then aborts:

*PANIC*
Unhandled IRQ (source unknown!)
pc: 30058454 sp:30008xxx (I cannot see the trailing numbers).
bt: end

I am able to view text files from the file browser.

I also tried booting from SD: It does, shows the RB logo and the version string, but then
Undefined instruction
pc:3005C880 sp:300008xx

If I hit a key it reboots and shows:
PANIC
Unhandled unmasked IRQ 04: DMAC  (status 0x000000010) (cannot count the  zeros ;-)
pc: 30058B2E8 sp: 30008xxx
bt: end

Rebooting by itself ...
ATM it really shows WPS (as I have resume last track on), but is frozen ...

To cut a long story short: Is there anything I can try, e.g. adjusting certain voltages or timings? Or is the DRAM faulty?

Any hint is appreciated.

Thanks
johnb

P.S.: When I boot into the OF and start a track it also crashes/reboots. It seems to build the database ("Refreshing your media") however.

I just also again booted from SD and kept pressing FF; WPS shows and it is seeking, the bar changes, but when I release the key it again crashes with
PANIC
Unhandled unmasked IRQ 04: DMAC

FM Radio works fine in RB and OF.

Try http://knk.square7.ch/cvdd2/rockbox-clip+-cvdd2_scaling-12.zip
It don't use DMA for DAC, so possibly should work or you will got some another error :)

Thanks a lot, Mihail!

I am able to play songs both from internal and external memory!

I now remember that version from the testing phase - being a little slow and sluggish  ;-)
But that's perfectly fine if it renders this faulty hardware usable.

Edit: with the SD card inserted it is not that stable, i.e. while browsing no directory content is shown.
I need to read up again in the testing thread, what SD worked best with that version ...

If you able compile rockbox, you can get patch: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,51184.0.html

Thanks for the pointer to the patch. I will give it a try.

Edit: Really cool. 3 different SD cards work flawlessly, regular responsiveness.
So the problem with this hardware is only DMA related, not any voltage or frequency scaling.

For reference, here is the build with just this patch applied:
