Hi ALL!

I recently found out about being able to upgrade the iPod hard drives with SSD ones and bigger capacities so decided to purchase one already with the modified 256GB SSD already installed.
I found a seller on eBay who was able to custom build the iPod to my specification and so researched the models available. I decided on an Apple iPod 256GB 5th Generation 5.5 Wolfson DAC SDXC Enhanced SSD with a bigger battery.

My Model number is MA147LL  (if this helps)

I have never used third party software with my previous iPods so am very worried about getting it wrong. I have been looking at the posts on here and am getting more confused than when I first thought about installing Rockbox. I have seen the disclaimer posted prior to the installation guides and this has made me even more concerned about getting it wrong.

I have a new MacBook Pro 2017 and would like to get advice that I can understand with regards to installing Rockbox on my iPod using my Mac ( I do have access to a Windows laptop but have not used one since XP!!!!). If there is someone who can guide me step by step that would be great!!!!

Please let me know what I need to do to start things off....

ATB!

David

There are instructions in the manual, however, devices modded with flash storage often have compatibility problems with rockbox, so you may be stuck with the apple firmware regardless.

Thanks for the heads up!

I have a 5.5G iPod with a 256GB ZIF SSD installed and everything works fine. If you have a mSATA SSD installed you may encounter heat issues during file transfer due to high power consumption. I never use the apple firmware. Installation of Rockbox using the Rockbox Utility was super easy. So if you follow the manual the installation process is easy.

Hi thanks for this and sorry for the delay replying. I bought an iPod 5th generation with 256GB micro SDXC card (Sandisk) in a flash adaptor. I tried to follow the installation process but it would not allow the installation of Rockbox?

I get the following message;

Progress window with the following

"could not open iPod: permission denied"
"could not open iPod: permission denied"
"could not open iPod: permission denied"

** I have been able to install
Rockbox firmware and Fonts only!!!!

It will not allow me to install Bootloader!!!!!

I have a MacBook Pro 2016 and downloaded the Mac OS version. I am unsure if maybe my SSD card is not compatible? I have emailed the installer to find out if he may be able to shed any light on any 'software' installed on the sod but I have done a restore with iTunes and it works with their software.
I feel like a dog with a bone and would really like to resolve this if it kills me (LOL)

I only bought the iPod as wanted uncompressed music files as I am an audiophile and like the idea of having most of my music on tap.

Regards,

David
