Rockbox on a small distant partition
« on: July 13, 2016, 07:18:34 PM »
Hello everyone!

Could someone knowledgeable please tell me: if I connect my Clip Zip with RB installed (by previous owner, I'm newb) to Linux (there's only /dev/sdb, which *can* actually be mounted as a partition! I don't understand how Windows detects it), partition it so that the only partition will be like 150MB, at the very end of the flash, and copy (previously saved) all the RB files there - will RB work fine from that small distant partition? Partition id = b (W95 FAT32), formatted with mkfs.vfat - will be fine for RB? (yes, I understand most of the space will not be accessible)

Thank you.

That's sometimes called "superfloppy mode".  Nothing special about it, you generally don't need partitions on a disk for it to work at all.

That should work fine. Make sure it's partition 1 though, or that any other partitions are of a type that rockbox doesn't handle.

Thank you very much! I'm confirming - OK, works fine. And thanks for reminding about floppies, I somehow forgot about them.. Thanks!

(I had a problem with my PC, that I had to solve before experimenting with the Zip, so replying late)
