Buying a replacement for Sansa Clip Zip / AGPTEK G05 Rockbox compatible?
(1/1)
joe.hisashi:
Hi!
After doing some research I have found that the G05 incorporates the ATJ2127 audio chip.
Would it be possible to run Rockbox on this device, or is the memory insufficient?
Despite its announced compatibilty, the AGPTEK Rocker is a little too expensive for my needs, since I'd primarily use the player in the gym.
After a quick look at the Rockbox buyer's guide the only devices that make sense are Sansa players.
My previous player was the Sansa Clip Zip, which I've had for 3 years, yet I have only recently learned about the existence of Rockbox. (Of course it died three days after I discovered this incredible firmware alternative)
The G05 does everything the Clip Zip does, just better, which is why I chose it.
But after learning about Rockbox I might still exchange it for another Sansa player, if Rockbox is not compatible.

If you haven't done so already you may want to read through the following links that discuss AGPTek devices. Many if not most cannot run Rockbox and neither can the newer Sansa players apparently (search for other threads on that).

AGPTek does have the newely released AGPTek Rocker that might support Rockbox once a port is done for it.

I have read those threads, but couldn't find a definitive answer on whether a device with the ATJ2127 audio chip, such as the AGPTEK G05, supports Rockbox.
Do you specifically know that the G05 is not supported?
elwing:
Don't take that as set in stone, I'm not a developer here. But I'm pretty sure that dev already stated that this soc has by far not enough ram to run rockbox...
joe.hisashi:
According to a post from pamaury those devices apparently do not have enough RAM for a Rockbox port, so I'll have to accept it.
What would you recommend in my situation?
The AGPTek G05's features, firmware, hardware and sound quality appear superior to the Sansa Clip + in every way.
Literally, the only reason why I might consider sending it back is the lack of Rockbox support.
The APGTek Rocker would cost an additional 25$ and as I have just been told, might only potentially support Rockbox as there can never be 100% certainty that a port will end up to be successful. https://www.rockbox.org/irc/log-20170222#12:23:10
So is Rockbox in itself a strong enough argument here?
I have read the FAQ and watched some Youtube video's of Rockbox reviews, trying to understand the lengths and capabilities of this software, but my knowledge of it is obviously not as extensive as yours.
