iPod 5.5 recently upgraded to SSD, problems with Rockbox
« on: November 18, 2016, 01:11:32 PM »
Hello everyone,

I have recently had an iPod 5.5 upgraded to a 256GB SSD drive (I think it is a Seagate ST500LX005).

I've restored my iPod via iTunes, then used the Rockbox Utility to Rockbox it. All went fine, I could boot Rockbox no problem, and browse around the menus.

But then, I plug it back in to my laptop (Win10) and start transferring my entire music collection (about 180GB), but after a while the transfer either dies by itself, or it gives me this kind of error http://imgur.com/a/kg1mo. It then hangs for ages, until I cancel the transfer. It then crushes my whole Windows Explorer and I have to re-launch it. This happened 3 times. When I plug the iPod back in, I can see the list of folders but none of them can be opened. And then the iPod itself will not launch Rockbox, giving me some error message upon booting.

What the hell is going on? I had a 7g iPod classic for months, Rockboxed, and it never gave me any sort of issue...

Is it because of the SSD?

Thanks!

A little update. I tried again and while the transfer failed again, at least it didn't screw up my iPod. Rockbox booted fine, but all the folders were empty. So I plugged it back in, deleted everything, and tried again with just 3 folders/albums. That worked out just fine, I am playing it right now.

Why?

If your SSD doesn't work with Rockbox's drivers, you can try using the Apple firmware for USB transfers.  You may have disk corruption during normal use however.

Sorry, silly question: what do you mean by "use Apple firmware". Sync via iTunes?

Trying transferring files with the Apple firmware, or Apple Diskmode is certainly a good idea to see, if the problems appears here too.

But the error message says something with I/O errors. This reminds me of my experiences with my SSD modded 5.5gen iPod. I use a 256GB Super Talent ZT3 SSD wit it and I had problems to connect the SSD to the motherboard right. Just connecting it gave me I/O errors too, because the connection got lost during file transfer. Applying some pressure to the connector fixed the problem (I just padded the drive a lot on the upper side, so that the backcase pushes the drive down). This is certainly no permanent fix, but I never had errors ever since. So try to see, if the problems comes from a bad connection of the drive.

Doesn't have to be iTunes, indeed better not to use it.  Just drag-and-drop, but in OF mode not RB mode.

Alright, thanks everyone. It seems like that doing a lot of small transfers is working out, for the time being. It will take ages to move all my music, but I'll see if I manage -- once it's there, it's there. Should it keep failing, I'll try doing it through the Apple firmware.

Sorry guys I need help again.

The transfer of files in Rockbox mode did NOT work out, so I had to restore the iPod again, put it in Disk Mode, and try that way. That worked.

I ejected it, disconnected it, and rebooted. Rockbox launched fine.

I went under Database to make it start do the database scan. It did, but it got stuck after just a few thousand items. Uncertain what to do, I rebooted it again after 5 minutes of wait (Select+Menu). Well, now it shows the apple for a few seconds, then the ROCKBOX title screen (the one with the "Ver. 3.13")....and that's it. It remains stuck there. If I reboot it, the same happens. If i connect it to my laptop, nothing happens at all (but if I put it in Disk Mode, then i can access the folders inside when plugged in).

What is going on? Should I restore it via iTunes again, and do it all from the beginning?

Can you please attempt to reproduce this with a build of Rockbox that isn't literally years old?

Please use the development build, not the release.
Thanks.

Edit: And,no, you don't have to restore with iTunes every time. You may format the volume mounted under the Original Firmware or forcing Disk Mode.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Sorry, I didn't realize I wasn't supposed to use the Rocbbox Utility! I'll try again.

EDIT: I meant, use the Utility but select "Development" rather than "Stable", sorry
