NHRD1878:
Hi everyone,

Im looking for a cheap MP3 player with expandable memory. My son's ipod classic died and I want to replace it for Christmas.

Also,  what benefits does Rockboxing give me?

Huge thanks in advance guys. Heard great things about this forum. Any advice on players,  expandable space or rockboxing in general would be much appreciated as I am a bit of a novice.

Serenity:
It depends on what you mean by "cheap." They're a bit pricey for a used player (most good Rockbox players have been discontinued), but the Sansa Fuze (original, not +) and Sansa Clip Zip are great Rockbox players and both feature a MicroSD card slot, good sound, and all the benefits Rockbox brings.

Those benefits include many different themes/fonts, more playback and equalizer options, support for a massive variety of audio formats, easy-to-use bookmark function for audiobooks, and robust playlist support. It really depends on what sort of features he's looking for, though it's possible the original Sansa firmware will suit him just as well.

The Rockbox manual details all the features.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to me. I really appreciate it.

I was reading up on the sansa actually.  Good substitute mp3 player,  yeah?

I'm also after a player that supports micro SD (preferably 64GB) and Rockbox.  I Was thinking of a 'Clip Jam' but now understand these aren't compatible.  I like the  'Sansa Fuze (original, not +) and Sansa Clip Zip' advice of the previous post these are available second hand  but are there any good value players currently on the market new?  Many thanks
