iPod 7th Gen Working On Manual Install
« on: October 26, 2016, 11:16:30 PM »
After some 3 days of playing around, I managed to get my 7th Generation iPod working, the instructions are a bit basic, I could make a video if it helps..

1. I completely restored my ipod with itunes, stopped ihelper in the task manager.

2. Downloaded and ran https://files.freemyipod.org/~user890104/bootloader-ipodclassic-v8-designware/RockboxBootloaderInstaller_iPodClassic_v8+DesignWare.exe (BETA) to load the bootloader, I got a fail on the cannot load  rockbox.ipod, when it restarted,

3. then I downloaded http://build.rockbox.org/data/rockbox-ipod6g.zip unzipped and manually copied it over to my iPod, rebooted and it worked.

hope it helps.

If anyone stumbles across this in future looking to install Rockbox please note that Freemyipod has detailed documentation on this very topic located here.

Hi jimthed,

I tried to do same in my Nano 7G but nothing happened. I unzipped the ipod6g.zip files in my iPod and it created .rockbox and that has many subfolders and files inside and then I restarted iPod again but nothing happened/ I pressed lock+home button together. What did you do exactly to install rockbox on nano 7g? Can u pls suggest how to reboot if there is any other way. I tried to use ipodpatcher but it did not work. Pls help. Thanks.

Regards,
Akash

Oh. Is there any way I can do something? Or any other Firmware for nano 7G? I did mistake that I exchanged my Nano 1st G under nano replacement program and 7G sound is just like crap. No where near 1G. I am not sure if installing other firmware will change anything but I want to try at least. Also trying to buy old nano 1g. Pls help if some other firmware to sound nano 7G better or any other option. Thanks.

@jimthedj65:

It's been a little over a year since your original post. May I ask how well Rockbox is running?

Hopefully you've all figured it out by now, but to any future Internet travelers who are none the lesser:
I am 100% certain that OP was talking about the iPod Classic 7G (which is very similar hardware/software-wise to the iPod Classic 6G, AFAIK), not the iPod Nano 7G.

Apologies, kinda late to the party. I’ve recently tried to install on a 7G Classic. Installation runs and ends and seems to be fine. No error messages etc. However when I reboot Rockbox isn’t there, still just Apple firmware. Any suggestions or similar issues?

Installed and running smooth. I followed Saint’s posted instructions to the t and all was perfect! Thanks Saint. If anyone has issues follow those instructions precisely and it should be perfect.

Not sure if you were the user in #freemyipod-support earlier, but I have the Linux binary (not Windows, sorry) for mks5lboot and the bootloader binary (built from commit d64ff86) hosted on my site: https://fwei.tk/pub/6gboot/.

I'm not the same person from earlier I'm afraid. Thanks for your help, but I don't use linux :(. I might do use one of those OS emulators to do it, I'm not sure. I'll wait to see if anyone else can send me a windows version. Thanks though :)

The freemyipod server should be up now (only the static pages, though; the wiki is still down).

I click the link and get 404'd. I'm thinking of getting a iPod Classic/Video Gen 5.5 and doing it up with SSDs and a better battery and then installing Rockbox instead of messing around trying to get my iPod Classic 7G to work. I heard it a better DAC and stuff anyway.
