Ipod 5.5g + PA-CF18Z + UDMA
« on: October 21, 2016, 10:30:11 AM »
Hi,

A "newbie" here. I crossed rockbox many years ago with my archos recorder (original) then forgot about it until now. I'm playing with my old ipod video 5.5gen.

I need some help in identifying the issue with a conversion of the 5.5gen ipod video to CF.

I got a 40 pin zif to cf (pa-cf18z) adapter and a type I udma CF to sd adapter.

The install was easy and everything seems working, except I get "Data abort at <address>" errors. Mostly the same file will hang at the same address. When reinstalling with different SD cards, MicroSD->SD adapters and even a full side SDHC card I get errors at different addresses, but always on the same files at the same spots.

Another symptom is the occasional hang during writes (transferring files from the pc to the ipod) and occasional reset of rockbox.

Now, I get no issues at all with the original apple firmware (version 1.3, latest available), which leads me to believe that the problem is in rockbox.

I tried both 3.13 build and the latest development build from yesterday.

The CF->SDHC adapter works well in a PC reader with all cards. I cannot test the zif->cf adapter for lack of suitable interface.

Going back from the ZIF->CF adapter to the hard disk continued the "Data errors" too. Using 3.13 with the original HD seems to be the only stable revision.

One more symptom: Slow write speed with ZIF->CF adapter. The write speed with the HD in the ipod is about 10MB/sec. The write speed with the adapter was 3-6MB/s with frequent hangups at 0byte for several seconds. The UDMA to SDHC in a PC reader is 16MB/sec. The cards are all Sandisk: A Class 6 8GB one and a Class10 U1 32Gb and 64GB sandisk extreme.

Visual inspection of the ZIF to CF adapter leads to no clues. Soldering is good. The alignment of the connectors is good.

Any clues ?

Rockbox is very touch-and-go with flash-modded ipods.  Both adaptors have to be right (the generic ebay ones often aren't) and even the brand of sd card can be an issue.

Write-speed is generally slower with sd card mods than original HD.

First thing (that _might_ solve the problem) is to always sync with the ipod in OF mode.

Might be better asking about it on the ipod-mod head-fi thread.

Thank you. Will check on head-fi too.

Would you suggest to get an integrated zif->microsdhc adapter (either iflash or a clone) ?

Shall I also go for a PNY microsd ? I had a similar issue with sandisk extreme on a zenfone-ii phone where it would 'eject' the microsd for no reason.
