iPod Classic 6G: USB looping connect and disconnect.
« on: September 01, 2016, 01:47:27 PM »
So to start this off: yes, I know the classic 6G is not officially supported, and yes, I know that the version I'm using is horribly outdated (we'll get to that in a minute). I just figured this would be the only place I might get an answer.

I have this old ipod classic 6G which I want to use again after a bit of time. It's already running Rockbox, version e2f943f-160129. It's also running (and I know that's a problem) emCore v0.2.3 rev 859.
Now it works fine, charges fine, only things that is wonky is that when I want to connect it to my laptop it will start connecting (shows the usb loading thing and windows (10 btw) makes the "device connected" sound) and then immediately disconnects (rockbox drops out of USB mode, Windows makes the "device disconnected" sound).

Same problem occurs when running the Rockbox fallback image from the emCore menu. Pretty much the same thing happens when using UMSBoot, only this time Windows will actually throw a driver error.

Other things to note: It used to work fine, even on this laptop IIRC. Already checked the cable and the port, seems like there's no problems there.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and pretty much everything else I could think of, but it's not working. Because of this, I cannot update or reflash my ipod either so no way to recover it as far as I know.

If anyone knows of a possible solution that would be great. Thanks in advance.

I don't have an iPod 6g to test on, but I think you can just go into DFU mode and install a new bootloader even if disk mode isn't working. Have you tried installing the new bootloader?

Not 100% sure, but I think those instructions should still work unless something is wrong with Windows or the player.

Apologies, seems the cable just broke down at an unexpected moment.. Apparently the cable I got from a friend was a knock-off, broke down after a couple of uses.

Got a new (good) cable, seems to be working fine know. Updates and new music are coming to this iPod  :)

Thanks though!
