iPod 3rd Gen with micro SDXC freeze

I've upgraded my iPod 3rd gen 40GB to solid state, using a 128GB micro SDXC card, via a micro SD to Compact Flash adaptor and a Compact Flash to 1.8" IDE Adapter.

I can install the stable Rockbox build and it will load. Unfortuately I can't get it to do anything more than browse through the menus.

Any attempt to play a file or configure font etc results in a crash and freeze, needing a
Menu+Play reset/reboot.

I've experimented with a couple of the Dev builds with the same result.

The upgraded iPod works fine using the Apple firmware.

Prior to the upgrade Rockbox ran perfectly on the original Toshiba 40GB HDD.

Any ideas?

SD adapters seem to work poorly or not at all with rockbox, so if yours doesn't work you probably need to use the apple firmware.
