ipod 3gen w/ sd card shows "no folder". Disk mode freezes.

I have an ipod 3rd gen (original) with 256GB SDXC card and rockbox 3.13 installed. It has a DOS partition table. The second partition is formatted fat-32. It had been working (though it gives me trouble off and on).
I tried using rockbox's file manager to move some audio files and rename some directories. This failed horribly, resulting in all the moved files having 0 bytes. I put the SD card in my computer (running Linux), recovered the original files, copied some more on, and put it back into the player. The only files I touched were in /Music and /Playlists.
Now, when I start the player, it sits at the apple icon longer than usual, then shows the !folder icon before rebooting. The cycle repeats. If I hold the two outside buttons for disk mode, it instead hangs at the apple icon, presumably until the battery dies.
I can still access the card on my computer. fsck found (and fixed) a dirty bit, but nothing else.
How can I get this player to work again?

wodz:
It is IDE-SD adapter that causes problems. It is worth noting that Apple firmware (disk mode) doesn't work as well so this is not rockbox related.

saratoga:
It sounds like the SD adapter isn't working right. Is this specific model known to work with the 3g?

I'm not sure where to find out whether the IDE - CF adaptor is known to work. I got it on eBay from a Chinese seller many moons ago. On it, I see:
CF-1.8" ADAPTER
VER: VA1
and
CH0630222A+
The CF - SDXC adaptor is only listed as working with 5gen to 7gen on the seller's website.

wodz:
IDE-CF adapter is only wiring thing. What is usually causing problems is CF-SD which needs to translate ATA commands to SD commands which most of do not implement 100% properly.
