[SOLVED] iPod 3G 15GB model wacky controls
(1/1)

Hey guys. I've modded my iPod with a CF adapter and 64GB sandisk CF card. The problem I'm having is that the iPod's touch wheel starts going crazy and just starts selecting things on the menu by itself and/or skipping songs endlessly and becoming unresponsive. To get things working again requires me to try a million times to hard reset, boot into Apple OS, then do a hard reset into Rockbox.
I really like Rockbox so far and I just want to know if anyone has heard of this happening. The only things i can find to possibly be a culprit is the 64GB CF (which works fine in every way otherwise) or the CF adapter (which again seemingly works well).

I have no idea about the 3G, but I know that one common problem with CF-modding an ipod mini is thickness, as in the CF card is thinner than the original hard drive, which means the wheel assembly isn't properly supported. The solution there is to add some cardboard.

Thanks for the fast response. Did more troubleshooting and it seems that the interface starts having a mind of its own regardless if its plugged into a charger or not. without fail after 5 minutes or so, the units controls start skipping songs. I am testing now with a 32GB CF card i borrowed from my girlfriends modded iPod 3G 15GB.the iTunes disconnect problem has so far stopped, as expected. Am installing rockbox now and will report back.

OK so even with a Duracell 32GB CF the skip problem is still happening. It's important to remember that this iPod has always functioned properly otherwise, and still does with official Apple firmware. I'm thinking I may have a older revision of the hardware?
Here is a video showing the issue in action, along with the adapter being used and the 64GB CF that was previously tested. Luckily, I have a few other exact same iPod models as this one so I am going to test those as well.
It starts skipping at 32 seconds

Found the solution, but I wish I found the problem :(
I installed Rockbox on two other iPod 3G 15GB models, both equipped with CF adapters and the CF cards previously tested, and Rockbox runs perfectly fine. There must be some kind of anomaly in the hardware of the one iPod that doesn't run Rockbox properly. wtf...
I've installed the OEM HDD in the iPod that doesnt like rockbox and it works fine with Apple OS, so I'll just keep that one stock I guess.
