I've since bought another sd card - genuine sandisk 200gb, and still the same issue with the private build

No, but if you wish to help - we can try.

1. Install new debug build:  http://knk.square7.ch/rockbox-clipplus_sd-1.zip
2. Play file on which you have problem.
3. After problem occurs wait few (2-5) seconds and press pause.
4. Enter to menu: system > debug > dump log file
5. When dump completed, connect USB.
6. You should have file .rockbox/logf.txt - upload it (or attach to your post).
