a language switching problem
«
on:

hi all,
this is michal from Slovakia. i have one annoying and strange problem.
so the situation is following: i am using an 8 gb sansa clip plus,
with rockbox 3.13 installed. i am using it in slovak language. but if
i want to switch my mp3 players language to hungarian, the menus are
in english, not in hungarian, as they should be. and yes, i already
created the voice file for the hungarian language. when i open the
"magyar.lng" file in the langs file on my player, i can see clearly a
hungarian text there, so i guess there is no problem there. any
Solutions, advices would be appreciated.
thanks in advance,
Michaal.

Several things:
1 - Why are you using Rockbox 3.13? You really should move to using the development builds, which are infinitely more stable and feature complete.
2 - Are you aware that a voice file is only useful for spoken voice menus and doesn't govern what is displayed to you in the menus at all?
I ask because you didn't specifically mention being blind or otherwise disabled, and most people find spoken voice menus to be highly annoying if they do not have a disability that limits them in some fashion.
3 - Are you aware that the Hungarian translation are user-submitted (and in fact many of our translations are incomplete, we only have 3 or 4 languages with a 100% complete translation due to our requirement that the submitter must be fluent in the language they are translating), and are only as complete as the community cares to make them?
You are using a VERY old version of Rockbox, and the Hungarian language is only approximately 84% complete in the development builds.
I would guess that it almost certainly significantly less complete when Rockbox 3.13 was released...which was just shy of 3 years ago.
3 - To cover all the bases here, just in case the issue is not caused by your use of a truly, truly ancient version of Rockbox, can you attach your config.cfg for examination please?

hi, yes, i am absolutely aware, that i am using 3.13, because it was installed and configured on my bought player. yes, i am blind, thats why use voice files for spoken menus. and no, i am not using development versions, because they are just... strange. atleast in terms of the spoken menus. for example the battery status is somewhere in settings, etc - i mean, i dont know if it should be this way or not, because everything seems not in its place, so i removed it, and went back to 3.13. and its not a problem, that the hungarian isnt fully translated. i need it only for basic operation, like browsing, or playing the files (as it will be used by an older person), so i dont care about more complex things. and here i am posting my cfg file:

thanks,
M.

hi, a quick update on the situation. i installed the development version, created a new voice file as required for slovak and hungarian. slovak Works well, but the hungarian is still in english. i set the the coding to unicode, then to central europe languages, but no change.

hi, my second quick and sad update. the language switch is solved, but. can anyone provide me the latest updated hungarian language file? as the one in development version, is very very far from completed. few menu items are translated. i had to go to some sound settings, to actually see any hungarian text in the menus. is the situation for example in daily builds different? is there the hungarian more complete or something? i would translate it myself, but the page and many edit fields seems too complicated for me.

The translations in the development version are the latest translations available.
As Rockbox grows and changes, which it has done
a lot
since the
3.13 Release
, part of that growth and change is in our text strings. As all our translation is done by users who speak the language they are translating fluently, as opposed to simple machine translation, if the strings are not translated and submitted as they change then they will fall through to the untranslated case.
This is effectively a long winded way of saying that as Rockbox grows and changes, translation can't be offered effectively without community involvement and submissions. If you perhaps had a technically minded sighted friend who was willing to assist you with
submitting the translations
then those submissions will be included in the development build further down the line.
I am not sure what you mean exactly with the situation regarding the daily builds or it being any different, perhaps there's some confusion regarding development builds and the release. There's only two release types for Rockbox, release and development.
Development builds are provided on each change to our code base, this may be several dozen times per day, it may be twice, it might be once, it might be several days with no change (and in turn no resulting builds) at all. The release builds have stagnated now, there has not been a release for a very long time due to the relative stability of the main branch for those targets that were receiving releases being largely stable. The purpose of the releases was to offer a type of snapshot for a known good point in time where things were largely stable and all features functioned as intended. These days the main branch of development is regarded as largely stable and the need for the release builds has faded. Another issue with the releases was the time and effort required to coordinate them.

thanks for answers, and explanations. so i download this .diff file from the patch site, what should i do with it now? i dont have sadly such sighted friend, thats why i would try to translate it on my own. maybe a stupid question or something. but wouldnt it be possible to make two .po files(used in poedit), one for normal, and the other for voice phrases? with poedit its extremely easy to translate and manage thing, the accessible way. just an idea. or is it possible, that i made somehow a mistake in making the voice files?
i launched the utility. clicked on the accessibility tab. then on the "gnerate options change" button. then "configure tts", set the language, and voice to "magyar", set the speed. clicked "ok". then "install", and the voice files were created. anything different, or i did it right? just another thought on the matter.
regards,
M.
