ipod classic 6.5g not connecting to USB (no DFU mode, no UMSboot, ...)

(1/1)

MightyBora:
Hi everyone,

I have an ipod 6.5g 160gb. Someone gave me this ipod for free because it was broken, I only repaired the screen (so far). There is an old version of emCORE (v0.2.3 r859) / Rockbox (644b83e - 120701) installed. The ipod itself seems to be working just fine. After I first repaired the ipod, it looked like it was stuck in a bootloop and I heard the HDD turn off and on. But after a full battery charge, this doesn't seem to happen anymore.

But a new problem has shown itself: I don't seem to get any response from my computer when I plug it via USB! The screen on the iPod changes to the USB logo screen, but the computer doesn't make any noise or other confirmation whatsoever.

I already tried DFU mode and UMS boot. Both don't seem to be working. Unless I'm doing something wrong.

When I charge the iPod via a wall outlet, the same USB logo screen appears, so effectively I can't use the ipod while charging, which I think is a little strange.

Does anyone have an idea? I repaired this ipod, but now it looks like there's no way to access it on a computer!

All help is welcome!
Regards,
Simon.

Frankenpod:
You don't say what kind of computer it is, but assuming its Windows, does the control panel devices list show that it recognises that anything at all is connected?  Either an apple device or an emcore device or something else (possibly in a non-functioning state).

Its possible the N-pin connector (I forget what number N is!) on the ipod is faulty, which would be awkward as its soldered to the motherboard.  Would be better if it were a bad hard drive.

Or there might be some other motherboard fault, also bad.   I assume you've tried different usb leads and usb sockets?

When you say dfu mode doesn't work, do you mean you can't get it to go into dfu mode at all?  I've had rockboxed ipods do that (just refuse to go into dfu mode at all, no matter how long I held the buttons down), on two occasions, and both times they somehow mysteriously recovered after being disassembled entirely and put back together again.  No idea what that was about, other than maybe something needing a complete loss of power to properly reset, or maybe something to do with click-wheel connections.

MightyBora:
Hi,

Thanks for replying.

Yes I'm using Windows 7. Where should I check for the device, in the device manager? I'm going to check tomorrow, as I was about to go to bed.

I'm hoping it's not a faulty connector... What are the chances of a broken screen and broken connector happening at the same time  :o

Yeah I've tried different leads and usb ports. I've also tried the same lead and port with my brothers iPod, so I know it works...

I think DFU mode is working fine. I hold menu+select for 15 seconds or so and I get a completely black screen. I guess that's DFU mode, but no way to tell :p

Maybe I'll unplug the battery tomorrow and see what happens, you never know :)

I'll report back tomorrow!

I feel like I should note that emCORE is not a Rockbox product in any way, shape, or form.

It can be used to (among many other things) boot the Rockbox binaries that the Rockbox project supplies, sure, but that does not mean that the Rockbox project should be handling support for it. If we don't supply it, we have no business supporting it.

If you want support with emCORE, please come and see us at the Freemyipod Support IRC channel on Freenode. That link will open a web client with the correct channel pre-filled.

Another thing I feel that I should make note of is that you really shouldn't be using emCORE at this stage. Please consider it deprecated. It was never intended for mass public consumption. It is, and always has been, a development tool that just so happens to also be capable of booting Rockbox binaries.

At this point, all new users should be using the dual-boot bootloader patch sets provided by Cástor Muñoz in our gerrit instance. I talk about this in some detail in this thread, for convenience I have supplied an archive of this work here.

I unplugged the battery today. Also did some cleaning in the usb connect. There was a little gunk in there ... :-| Also did a some random cleaning of the motherboard. Unfortunately no luck... Still no response when connecting to USB... Getting a little desperate :(

@Saint: I know, I read your post about emCORE in the other topic. It wasn't me who initially installed on the ipod. (I don't know the guy who did it). Thanks for supporting me anyhow ;)

Regards,
Simon.
