Plugin for ABX?
« on: January 09, 2016, 05:05:16 AM »
Hi!

I've an Idea for a possible new rockbox feature and I don't know if this was tried before. The idea is to have a plugin to be able to ABX between files of different codecs/bitrates/quality settings - so that I could fine-tune my bitrate settings for a rockbox enabled device. (It does not make much sense to ABX on PC and than play on a rockbox device).

Thanks!
BB.

Hi,
I don't know if this has been done before, I guess it is possible in the sense that one could write a plugin to ABX between different files. However, that would require one file per setting. I guess you could write a plugin which takes a FLAC file, encode it with some settings and then play it back, but writing a good encoder is a really difficult and intensive task. So I think that's why most people ABX on computers. But I have to say I am not expert at all.

I thought about this 10 years ago but never got around to writing it. You'd have to encode the files on the PC but you could play them and do randomization on the device.

Saratoga: That's exactly how I meant it. It would make no sense to encode the files on the device.
