SSD upgrade to Toshiba Gigabeat F40 throws up System Error 0020003
« on: November 29, 2015, 07:52:39 PM »
Hey folks,

I picked up a KingSpec 1.8" 128GB SSD (http://www.amazon.com/128GB-KingSpec-1-8-inch-40-pin-Controller/dp/B007PR5EOI) to replace the aging HDD in my Toshiba Gigabeat F40. I followed along with the instructions on the wiki's Gigabeat recovery process page (http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/GigabeatFXPort#Gigabeat_Recovery_Procedures), made certain the SSD was FAT32 formatted, and copied my existing Rockbox install and GBSYSTEM folder from the old HDD to the new SSD.

The Gigabeat, after clicking the battery toggle off and then on again, powers up, sits at the logo for a moment or two, then craps out with 'System Error 0020003", which I have never encountered before.

Now, it appears that only one other person has had such an error that has actually posted to these forums (from using a CF mod on a Gigabeat F), so I wonder if it has something to do with either the SSD itself, or the Gigabeat not playing well with solid state storage. Most every other device I've modded to use solid state storage in any way hasn't failed me yet. If anyone has had success with CF mods and can offer a pointer or two, I would gladly appreciate anything that can be given to help me get back on track.

Is that error from Rockbox or the Gigabeat ROM?  IIRC, flashing the gigabeat ROM with a rockbox bootloader isn't too difficult, in which case that might work around limitations in what the ROM supports.

The error is being thrown by the Gigabeat ROM itself. I haven't flashed the Rockbox bootloader to this device before (I meant to but kinda wussed out of doing so).

To reply to my own post, I resolved the issue by first completely restoring the Gigabeat F with a full, fresh copy of its original firmware. Once it acknowledged the new SSD, I installed Rockbox, then replaced all the OF files with the dummy files. Everything is working as it should now.

Next step: flash the RB bootloader to it. :)
