iRiver H320 CF to SDXC Ata error: -32 anyone? ((FIXED))

Hey guys,

So far my first post here, I'm not new though - been using my rockboxes for ages now. Changed from IpodNano2G to iRivers. Glad to be here and hopefully I'd get to help people here 

To the point: I got myself an iRiver H320, installed last version via rockboxUtility1.4.0, installed the bootloader (Rockbox Bootloader Version 5) linked in Robkbox 1.29 (J) and all good (with the original 20Gig Hard Drive).

My set up:
1 50 PIN Adapter from Motherboard to CF Male (see photo) - CF-1.8''IDE Adapter Ver:VA1

1 CF to SDXC Adapter (see photo) - Type1 UDMA Extreme CF Adapter

1 SDXC Adapter with microSD - Sandisk 64GB MicroSDXC 400X - Formatted under FAT32 32.768


When booting i get
ATA Error: -32

I've tried with another SD Card and I get the same error, I wonder what could this be? I've also tried changing the jumper master/slave and I get the same.

Any clues? help? thoughts? Ic an change the microSD probably in the next days and I will keep you guys posted.

side note: I've read that some bootloader changes might solve this problem, but asking before trying.

No leads guys? I actually cannot even get to the definition of the Error 32 so I can sort it out myself...

My probable approaches:

0> Is this hw related or sw related (rockbox flow)
1> If hw related:
     > Is it the adapter
     > Is it the SD, would I need another one?
2> If sw related:
    > Would the bootloader change help? which one you recommend?
    > Would a nother rockbox version help?

Today I got myself a 32GB CF Card (I'd prefer the SD approach though, as it brings more memory), see below:

Okay - tried the CF card and same error ATA -32.

At this point could be either the formatting I'm giving or the Adapter.

Can you guys by any chance specify a good formatting program and FAT32 settings, to see if I got them right?
What adapter would you guys recommend that really do the work? keen on buying another one.

I know it sounds dumb, but I might be putting the adapter the other way - CF Card branding is facing the outer case of the player.

  I see no one has any clues to this - In case anyone any day have alook to the post, I will keep my updates, below:

I updated to the 2 firmwares shared on http://hendrik.feuerware.com/rockbox.htm, and now I'm getting a "No partitions found" error on both the SDXC and CF Cards. I actually did a full copy of the partition of the working H320 HDD into those cards, and still getting the same error.

Difference now is that I can actually boot to original OS and I see the cards, but I cannot format them - I can see the led transfering data but I cannot do anything with it.

I can rule out at this point the partition being the problem, as I did the exact copy of the partitions, Either the ZIF Adapter of the CF Adapter Card+CFCard. I actually tried several SD Cards and I get the same error.

I'm almost giving up at this point and considering maybe 1.8' SSD Drives.

Any thoughts? leads?

I realize it was probably attempted as a debugging step, but, absolutely no support will be offered to unofficial builds.

Assuming the initial report was made against an official build (potentially dangerous assumption), the most likely candidate for error here is the adapter plate. It's not impossible, but pretty difficult, to screw up formatting a volume as FAT.

These adapter plates are very hit and miss. Lots of them are incredibly cheaply made, one wouldn't think there would be a lot of room for error in these devices, and in some respects there isn't, but I've been surprised many times before. I have come across ones with entire traces missing on essential lines, I have come across ones with improperly cut traces, I have come across ones that looked like they were soldered by a blind epileptic with cerebral palsy, I have also come across ones where the shipper thought it was OK to just stuff them in a standard envelope and hope for the best - which apparently the postal service took as an invitation to play hackey sack with it.

Thanks a lot for the reply [Saint] this gives me a little bit more hope, and yes I'm mostly focusing on the Original Build that I want to use, more than anything else - Hope you understand but I have to exhaust my tests to be able to scope the fault+solution in my case.

I've decided I will buy a couple more adapters, and try them with CF and SD+CF. I'm hopeful I will get to a good point here.

Moreover, I would like to ask you from being an experienced Rockboxer, what approach would you recommend? SSD?

So your hypothesis was correct: The adapter wasn't doing the work.

I tried the following one (ebay): http://goo.gl/cRDE0D and now the CF Works! I'm getting real good transfer rates + my battery lasts "forever" ha.



Regarding that CF to SD converter, it does not work (I tried a direct converter and it worked [see my other post]). I will get a new one and see if I get any success.


At this point, nothing but recommend the SD Adapter directly as you can have multiple ones (I have three therefore carrying 190G in no weight). Only con is that you'd have to work on a DIY case modification to be able to add different SD's - I'll be posting my mod soon.
