Flac/Ogg Vorbis Gapless is gone--Ipod 5th Gen Video
« on: August 31, 2015, 05:38:21 PM »
 :'(
I used to have gapless playback with Rockbox on my Ipod, one of my main reasons for using it, but it is  GONE; I am playing either ogg vorbis or flac files; the same files play on foobar as gapless, opened files in .wav editor, no gaps, but I am getting .5 sec gaps which are QUITE disconcerting; tried everything, re-coded ogg vorbis with foobar, dbpower amp, same result.  Crossfade is off.  Using the latest version of Rockbox....  I am in quandary phase...  Any suggestions?  (Besides "Don't Panic".)

Thanks in advance.   :)

Do you know what version of Rockbox you were running when you last had working gapless playback?

last version used --- no; was within the past year or so

also, just tried increasing skip buffer, which did not help

the only other change I made was to use album covers in jpg but I tested that by removing them
and changed to a much larger hdd, but other than the 1 second gap, I've had no other problems in playback

You mean it stopped working when you changed hard drives?

If I knew that for sure then that would be the answer, but I am not sure about that
not sure why that would make a difference either

It shouldn't make a difference.  The files are buffered into RAM during playback, so the disk shouldn't even be spinning.

I'm curious, if you try small files, do you get the same pause between each of them?  Is the disk spinning?

the size of the file doesn't seem to matter
not sure how I would know if hdd is spinning but can't imagine it is not, no sign it isn't, how would you tell it wasnt?

Also, I tried increasing the buffer to 1 min but it did not affect anything

You iPod vibrates when the disk is spinning.

That setting won't matter.

I have been waiting to update this--had a second, identical ipod, in repair--Mission Repair reformatted the drive a second time and had to restore all the music, buyer beware.  This ipod is playing gapless, so there could be some sort of hardware issue with the other player but it is not the HDD.

I find the odds of this being hardware related to be infinitesimally small.

I can't even think of a way that the hardware would be able to break in such a way as to only present such an incredibly specific error.

What I find to be massively more likely is that it is a user derived config change, which would account for the second identical iPod not presenting this error due to the fact that it had a clean install (and therefore the default settings) applied to it forcefully.
If you were to reset your device configuration (ask our fine manual about how to reset your configuration), I would be surprised if your issue didn't just magically disappear.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Well, for anyone who encounters the same problem:  I tried what I thought was everything and at times it seemed the problem was resolved, but then, strangely, some files played gapless and some did not.  Finally I found there were corrupted files in the .rockbox folder, I deleted that, and replaced with a backup copy and now it's all working as it should (except I can't get auto resume working anymore, but I can live with that).
