New iPod OS causes battery to drain with RockBox
« on: July 08, 2015, 01:23:54 PM »
I've been converting gen 5.5 iPods to 256 GB with no problems using RockBox.  Until today.  I went to restore an iPod and was told by iTunes that there was a new OS for the iPod.  I tried not to download it but iTunes would not proceed with the restore until I did.  The iPod restored, I installed RockBox and plugged in to charge.  The battery went from partially charged to completely drained.  I've tried several iPods, all the same generation, with the SD card drive as well as the regular hard drive.  In all cases the battery discharged when plugged into a high capacity charger.  If I boot up in the Apple OS they all charge fine.

Did Apple put in a poison pill?  Is there a fix?

The Apple firmware won't have any effect, so thats probably just a coincidence.

But if I understand correctly, you reinstalled rockbox and now you're saying the device doesn't charge?  Try a different charger?

I've tried three different chargers and three different iPods.  On all the iPods I restored yesterday or today the battery drains with RockBox running, nothing playing, and plugged into a 2.3 Amp charger.  iPods that were restored earlier with the same version of RockBox charge normally.  While I agree that it seems unlikely, it's repeatable.

Any chance someone else can try to restore an iPod, preferably a fifth generation, to see if you have the problem?

I have a 5.5G I can test with - Not an SD mod, but can mess with a CF card that I know works + a ZIF/CF adapter.

Question : OS and version of iTunes?   And what's the version of the OF being updated?   If memory serves, 1.3 was the last firmware for the 5.5G.

EDIT:  Windows 8.1 x64 / iTunes 12.2.   "1.3" is still the latest firmware and I did a restore with it, then installed Rockbox using the 1.4.0 Utility (latest dev RB version used), rebooted, plugged into a wall charger and so far no drain.  This is just a USB charger with the iPod cable attached to it btw.  I have an OSX system as well but didn't try this on that OS.

What would concern me is that "new OS for iPod" pop-up.  1.3 has been the last version of the OF for something like seven years I think?  I know Apple Music is new, but tmk there is no recent update firmware to the iPod 5.5G's (and Apple Music doesn't support them).
