A sad day for my clip zip
« on: June 11, 2015, 09:14:10 PM »
Well, after almost 4 great years with my clip zip, the display finally died out. (Technically it still shows text but the whole screen is red in color and very hard to read.) Alas, apparently they have discontinued the clip zip line and the cheapest I can find one (prefer the 8gb model) is selling $150-$200+ dollars!! This makes me sad. It was the best mp3 player I ever purchased and Rockbox made it that much better. I was reading the forum threads on the clip sport and it's been hinted at that Rockbox might not be able to port to this mp3 player do to memory restrictions/processor?

At any rate I'm in a bit of a limbo ATM as I need to replace my clip zip but the idea of spending $150 for a replacement one is a huge pill to swallow. Is there another small light weight mp3 player that Rockbox works on that is comparable to what the clip zip provided? If there was a way to fix my clip zip screen I'd do that but not sure if that's possible.. :(

The picture below looks like it wouldn't be so bad stuck in red but my phone flash brightened up the screen quite a bit so it looks better in that picture than it actually does..

If that's the cheapest you can find, I don't think you looked any farther than Amazon. They go for $30-40 on eBay all the time.

I've fried 3 of the POS because apparently a "sporty" mp3 player can't uphold sweat.

The clip sport you can find pretty cheap as well, but as of this writing there is no rockbox for it (might change soon, if you look at the other thread.) Only reason I don't get one now is I anticipate it dying just as fast as my last two. They generally last about 3-4 months for me.

I feel your pain. I just went running outside with my clip zip for the first time and it died! So annoyed. How I would love an updated e280 (with micro usb cable instead of proprietary)! I bought my clip zip on amazon for 60 bucks, now they have jumped to 100 as they are discontinued!

The button to go to the next track quit responding today. So sad. I took the unit apart in hopes I could fix it. Nope. It's not a rubberized membrane like IR remotes but a metal pimple on the main board that has gone tits up. Oh well. The audio with the latest RB beta firmware is very good. I hate to change to anything else.

Now the question: Another Zip or wait for a Sport?

If you are willing to give up the radio, clock, microphone & DOOM, you could always go down the iBasso DX50/DX90 manual install route...

Hah, even the fuze+ is going for $100+ on Amazon, and that player is garbage.
I think it's time to kickstarter a Rockbox PMP
