manually install bootloader
« on: April 25, 2015, 09:52:40 PM »
step by step how to install the bootloader....

did get rockbox back on my cowon, but after a couple of days, it kept on going into "panic mode" with the white screen!

installed the latest firmware from cowon on the d2.....

tried to update the firmware on the rockbox utility, however, it seems to dl the 2 files of the cowon's firmware and not do nothing....it just keeps on asking for the firmware after dl the firmware files...so

maybe someone can tell me step by step? (believe have donated like $10 bucks to you guys so, maybe a little help?)

Hello wilkes5,

I also get the panic message on my D2+, but it seems, that the latest builds are buggy. I have no problems with 3.13.

The mesage is: *PANIC*
dc_writeback_callback () - Could not write to sector 81 93 (error -1)
pc: 2005C064 sp:200B3228
bt end

I have talked about that to pamaury on IRC and he kindly tried to help and even provided a test build, but no luck.

Maybe someone can have a look at this problem too?

Greetings,
c_k

Anyone found the time and motivation to look at this problem?

Here is the link to the discussion in IRC, where pamaury kindly posted the diff:

all man....if it's true what you say  "the lastest builds are buggy..."  then it might be upsetting, becuase....

have used rockbox for a good part of a year before my eq went out, then tried reinstalling it recently and it is when the "panic" mode thing started happening! (with the new builds maybe??)

maybe rockbox tech can chime in again....

don't really understand....

"Patch this into your original Cowon firmware using mktccboot

    ../tools/mktccboot path_to_firmware/1/D2N.bin bootloader-cowond2.bin D2N-patched.bin"

so, does "tcctool" work instead of "Patching"??

got mine working so far doing the following....

dl the rockbox utility (go to "http://www.rockbox.org/download/"  then hit the big button)...

ounce you have the rockbox utility running on your computer...click on the "change" button in the top right location...
click on "Cowon" from the list, then check the box which says "show disabled targets"....(doing such will make "D2 unstable" appear in the list, but first you have to click "ok" from a message which appears)...
click/highlight  "D2 unstable", then click the "ok" button on the bottom right...
doing such will bring you back the the install main page...

***if you have already do so, make sure you upgrade the D2's firmware from the Cowon site** doing such will give you files 0,1,2 on your computer***

back to the utility...
click the install button towards the bottom of the page..(it will ask you to locate the Cowon firmware 3 times....you have to select one by one (and then click "ok") for files "0", "1", "2"   note** only the 1st file in file "2" will go)

once you have installed through the utility, then you need to dl "rockbox-cowond2" file from the D2 manual installation page on the rockbox website...

important....once you click on the file on your computer, it will give you 2 files ".." and ".rockbox" or something like such...
it's only important to unzip the "rockbox." file to you D2
ALSO*** the ".rockbox" file needs to go to your SD card, not the Cowons internal memory..

doing such gives me rockbox functional in my player     **but my fingers are crossed bigtime!!***

rockbox tech, believe my version of "step by step" deserves a worthy consideration, no?  you guys should see the linear algebra notes....fool proof

SORRY, 1 more step....

make sure you delete the "rockbox." for the cowon's internal memory if it's present...

for some reason with it present it sends the player into the "panic mode" more often?

I have a recently "brought back from the dead" D2 and tried this - could not get it to work, same PANIC errors as others.   Eventually compiled 3.13  on my own and that was the only way to get a stable installation working.

My guess, again similar to others, is that there's something in the recent source code that the D2 simply does not like.   :(

Post #309 has to be the easiest thing to follow, period!       http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?p=342063#post342063

Cowon D2 until I die!!    Sorry Rockbox tech, the guy who put such instructions together really puts my instructions to shame.....he deserves a hand.  Asked if he would give me his paypal, so could maybe send him $5, but, he refused.
