CompactFlash cards with 64GB or higher capacity compatible with iPod Mini 2G
« on: April 06, 2015, 08:58:54 AM »
Hey everyone,

Recently I picked up a couple of iPod Mini 2G units, both of which I modded using CompactFlash cards.

One is using a Transcend 133x 32GB CF card I had from my old iPod Video. For the second, I picked up a Transcend 64GB 400x CF card: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/666610-REG/Transcend_TS64GCF400_Compact_Flash_400x_64GB.html

However, I am noticing some problems with the 64GB card. The card itself is confirmed to be working fine after testing in a card reader, however, putting it into the iPod Mini causes the unit to constantly show the "Sad iPod" on screen. Setting it into Disk Mode works, but the drive doesn't show up on my system (Debian testing), although dmesg does see the iPod Mini as connected. The iPod makes no indication of any sort of disk activity whatsoever.

The card itself is specced as CF Type I, and UDMA-7 compliant, which AFAIK should be a good match. The ribbon connector to the iPod Mini board isn't damaged, and was tested with another card with positive results. I'm uncertain if perhaps I just landed a fluke card, or if the specs aren't something compatible with the Mini to begin with. My only other option would be to use an SD-to-CF adapter (http://www.tarkan.info/20121226/tutorials/ipod-and-sdhc-sdxc-cards) for further flash storage needs.

So my question is: are there any CF cards anyone has ever used that are 64GB or higher capacity in any successful flash storage mods?
