Database Update Issues

(1/1)

scorp7785:
I'm using the latest rockbox build (55f1d94) on a sansa clip+ and I'm having problems updating the database.

I have auto update enabled, but whenever I add media to the player the database takes forever to refresh (between 45-60 minutes). If I go into the .rockbox directory and delete all the .tcd files and initialize the database - it's built in less than a minute. Same thing if I try to update now rather than auto update. Something seems off here - it should take way less time to sort through a few files and add them to the database than to build the whole thing from scratch. Any ideas of what may be going on??

Thanks!!

You don't directly indicate when this issue presented itself, only that you're using the current (as of this writing) build.

Without anything solid to go by, my only suggestion at this stage would be to check the volumes for error.

I've been rockboxing since the first of the year...been through a few builds I've always seemed to run into this problem where the database update takes forever.

I would check the disk for errors, but this issue sounds strange.  Usually either the file system or files are screwed up and the database just crashes during building, or it builds quickly.  I'm not sure why it would build slow.

I had a similar database database problem with my Clip+.  I couldn't just add individual tracks, I had to drag the files over then rebuild the entire database which takes over an hour with a 25GB+ library.  I had to clear the drive then reload the disk from scratch then rebuild the database again.  Then I noticed a couple files were missing so I added just them, manually had it update the database and it seems to work now.

Patience seems to be the key.  When you rebuild your database, set it going, connect it to a charger then go do something else for a couple hours to give it time to complete the task.

Oh, and a note to those working on the Clip+ code, make it update the database in the foreground because you can't do anything with an incomplete database anyway.  If there was a display element to show progress that would be extremely helpful.  I'm not a coder so just take this last part as a suggestion :)
