Smart Watches ??
(1/1)
nerdrunner:
Are there any smart watches under consideration for porting?
Any suggestions for a hackable smartwatch?

Hi,
that's an interesting question. First I assume that would require some bluetooth headphones because smartwatch don't have an headphone output (I guess), which in turns means that the bluetooth stack of the watch must be programmable / not written with a binary blob. Also I think most smartwatches run a stripped down Android which is both good and bad because:
* in theory you can get the kernel source
* still most of the hardware is probably undocumented
* the bootloader might be locked as in many android phones
* you could run rockbox as an application, but it might not be sufficient to achieve a full port (especially audio)
* there is the question of storage: I don't know if smartwatch have a lot of storage or a microsd portAlso I fear the same thing which happened (and is happening) to smartphone will apply to smartwatches: tons of new models all the time, so the port will be obsolete even before starting :( Probably that the best candidates would be the most well known ones like the Pebble.

I'm also interested in rockbox for smartwatch. In this case, yes, I think an app would be the best way to go since I still want the watch to be able to function as a GPS running watch. I'm specifically interested in the Garmin GPS music watches. They "hold 500 [or 1000 depending on model] songs", so have some amount of internal memory. I'm interested in audiobooks and most audiobook players blow, especially when you are trying to shoehorn a music player into working with audiobooks. I love that Rockbox has all my features covered, ability to play at different speeds without sounding like a chipmunk, skip back or forward in short hops, and just generally being flexible to work how I want it to rather than how most people want it to. I really hope you'll consider adding an app at some point.
