Battery doesn't reach 100% on my Sansa clip+
« on: January 29, 2015, 04:38:55 PM »
Hello, I frequently update my Clip+ to the newest Rockbox development build. Recently, I noticed that the battery doesn't go higher than 93-94%, regardless of how much time I recharge it. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?, Thank you.

This percentile is determined from measuring the voltage (with a buffer margin to avoid deep discharge).

It is possible that the chemistry in your battery has degraded over time. If it really bothers you a lot, and you're determined to fix it (its pretty much solely an aesthetic issue and doesn't have any bearing on the functionality of the device), this would require that you set up a development environment capable of compiling Rockbox, and then change the upper bound of the battery percentile as displayed to the user.

None of this is terribly difficult, but one should consider time+effort/benefit. Essentially, if you're determined, and have the time and the dedication, and consider this a worthwhile endeavour - go for it, but only you know the the state of those factors and how they relate to your situation.

If you would like to go forward, we could certainly assist you in doing so.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

As mentioned, it's probably just a degraded battery, especially if it's an older/well-used player. My old Clip+ (which I bought close to 4 years ago and used a lot) doesn't get much beyond 96-97% these days, and runtime used to be better as well. I splurged on a new one recently, which displays no such issues.

Note that low battery indication may also occur if the battery cable isn't soldered properly. Some people have received players that showed rather short runtime and eventually died on them completely - the cable would be very likely to have come off entirely there. Too bad opening one of these players and getting it back together without looks and stability suffering too much is hardly trivial.
