iPod Nano 1st gen: wiped disk, can no longer detect volume
« on: January 31, 2015, 02:29:47 AM »
Hello all!

This is my first time using Rockbox. I installed it successfully on my 1st gen iPod nano using rbutil, and liked it a lot. However, I did not want to dual-boot Rockbox and the Apple firmware, so I wiped the iPod completely. I am using Arch Linux. I ran this command:

# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb && sync
(/dev/sdb was the location of the iPod)

Now, however, I cannot access the device to reformat it. I had unplugged it after running this command and received this error on the screen of the iPod:

   *PANIC*
   mount: 0
pc:00051650 sp:000CA19C
bt end

I have tried plugging the iPod into several devices. Nothing will detect it. Running lsblk does not show the device. It is not detected on Windows machines either. Is there any way to recover the device? I am willing to go to any sort of technical, advanced, or extreme method to recover it. Thanks in advance for your help!

Then restore using iTunes.

If you want to remove dual-boot entirely, see Advanced Rockbox install methods with ipodpatcher. Specifically, method 4: OSOS contains only Rockbox
(Note that since its a flash based target you'll likely not see the other listed benefit of reduced boot time, and that you'll need to perform this song and dance every time you update Rockbox)

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.
