I was able to find in the manual how to boot into SANSA firmware instead of Rockbox, (by depressing and holding the LEFT button as I plug into USB).  This works to boot into SANSA firmware.

I then was able to run ROCKBOX UTILITY and chose to REMOVE ROCKBOX COMPLETELY.    It did this, but when I try to reboot, it still tries to boot into Rockbox and then goes to the image of the USB plug.  It appear to still have the Rockbox bootloader.  I tried to disconnect and reboot into SANSA firmware, run rockbox utility and tries remove bootloader but it says it can't do it.  Try reinstalling the firmware.

I was able to find a photo showing where to re-solder the broken wire from the battery.  Here's the link:

How do I remove the Rockbox bootloader manually?

I need to get the battery wire resoldered.

Then I can download the latest SANSA firmware file from :  http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Sansa-Clip-Sansa-Clip/Sansa-Clip-Firmware-Update-01-02-18/td-p/280756     which produces the   clappa.bin file which they say to drag to the root of the sansa, and then reboot and it will re-install the Sansa firmware.   Does this make sense?

I recommend to reinstall the Sansa firmware. Then the rockbox bootloader is removed. Run chkdsk to check for file system errors and reinstall Rockbox. Have you backed up your files?
