Trying to get this to work...
« on: June 28, 2006, 01:14:28 AM »
I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, I just need some help getting my Rockbox bootloader to work and maybe than getting the actual Rockbox working on my iPod. I can code, but I'm no good with the Windows command-line as you'll see...

Anyways, before I give you my inquiry/problem I'd just like to say how wicked it is what you guys are doing and I really appreciate how convienant this app. is. As someone who's trying to master web coding and design I can really appreciate just how hard you've worked to make this work and just how nice it is that you're willing to take time out of your day to do this for the community. So all-in-all, thanks alot.

Now the question at hand...

I'm following your installion documentation at this location and I've made the directory on the 'C' drive called 'rockbox' and put all the required files in 'so far' and I've also discovered my iPod using the prompt and made the 'bootpartition.bin' file which I'm guessing is a back-up, but when I take the next step...and I type in:

ipod_fw -o apple_os.bin -e 0 bootpartition.bin

Absolutely nothing happens and I get an error message from the prompt saying that 'ipod_fw' is not recognized as an internal or external command or a program or batch file and I sit here baffled and not knowing what to do...I typed it all in correctly I think and I even tried some variations, but with the same result so I'm not sure what's going on and I figured you would all know better what the problem is...

Just a little note, I'm a Windows user and did not follow the Linux instructions before what I'm doing right now...I don't know if it would matter, but I didn't mess with that crap...also actually...I'm using a 5G 30gig iPod. Just to let you all know...  ::)

Yeah, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask here.

I was just about to say "you forgot to download ipod_fw.exe, or are running the command from a folder other than the one you put it in." ;)

Holy crap...this is the most wicked thing I've ever seen. It all works so flawlessly. Now one question though...

I've found that everything works great, even the Doom plug-in suprisingly, but something annoying is going on with my iTune's library. I know where it is and I turned it's hidden property off so I could view it as well as update my tag index...but...whenever I change my "Show Files" property in "File View" I can only view music and can't re-navigate to my root folder using my iPod's previous track button. Now...this actually sounds confusing...I'll re-word it...

I boot my iPod, browse to my music and when I go to the menu and change my Show Files property I can't go back to my root. My iPod makes me stay in my music directory unless I reboot it completely.

One more thing, do you guys suggest any plug-ins? Or would you suggest that I just delete my old iPod music directory and just uploading it all again to the Music folder you guys made?...I mean, it would be less confusing and it's all on my compy... :P

if you truly love rockbox for the music experience and all then i owuld delete my iTunes music folder completely (on the iPod) and then just create an organized music directory that rockbox could view...then afterwards use iTunes to transfer your videos only...to do this your gonna haveta remove all the music from the recognized library in iTunes...its what i do so if i wanna listen 2 music i use rockbox, but if i wanna watch videos i boot up apple OS only cuz rockbox doesnt support video playback...yet

as for the problem your having im kind of confused on your description but if u hold down menu a quick screen will come up and u can change the file view type by pressing play/pause till u get what u want then press menu again to exit...other than that for menu/folder browsing try using the reverse/back button on the iPod to exit out of a menu...i was so used to the apple OS that i kept pressing the menu button to go back but the menu button can only go back while in the actual config menu once u get to the root directory you need to push back to fully exit...it takes a while to get used to...cant say i like it better than the apple OS version but its just different

I'll admit I am a little confused as to your navigational problems.

If you could list the *exact* steps and what happens it might help. Include what your file view was before you started, and what you changed it to each time you change it because there are several options.

Other alternatives are yes, copying your music over with actual filenames (that's what I do) or using TagCache (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/TagCache)
