Ipod Classic 160 GB on Win 7 not recognized as USB device
« on: January 01, 2015, 02:11:19 PM »
I have just installed Rockbox 1.4.0 on Ipod Classic 160 GB. After copying some files and disconnecting it works fine.
However, I cannot connect again. When plugging in the USB cable Win 7 fails to activate the driver and the device is not recognize by USB. So I cannot copy anything more to iPod.
Any ideas what to do?

Firstly, no you didn't.

That's a version number for Rockbox Utility, not Rockbox itself.

Secondly, this is well known and mentioned a multitude of times across these forums, you will need to boot the Rockbox fallback image from the emCORE main menu's 'Tools' sub-menu entry. If this does not work for you, you will need to use another host (or operating system - preferably non-Windows, and definitely not a Mac) to connect to. Such are the burdens of using device ports classed as 'unusable'.

Thank you for the answer. I have followed all instructions closely and am sure that installation has been completed and there is no mention of booting the Rockbox fallback image from the emCORE main menu's 'Tools' sub-menu entry.
If this is something necessary to do and it is missing in the emCORE install instruction please complete it.

Under Win 7 I can't see files on disc, but Win 8.1 shows the root catalog of iPod.
Right now after iPod starts I can see 3 options, one is emCORE, but when I select it I just see "Dropped into emCORE console", there is no response when pressing the wheel, and there is no sign of USB device in Windows 7 or 8.1.
How can I run emCORE? Should I repeat the whole installation procedure? Is there anything I can do at this stage?

This doesn't really have anything to do with the installation.  Its just that the USB driver is pretty unstable so it may or may not actually work on your system.

I'm sorry, I don't recall anyone telling you to do this. Reboot the device, and forget about this option. It isn't useful to an end-user at all.

emCORE is an _extremely_ powerful development tool that just so happens to also function as a Rockbox bootloader in part. Realistically, it wasn't ever intended for end-users, and it provides them with far too much potential power to give themselves a very bad day, though they have to jump through some pretty specific hoops to get there.

It pays to note that emCORE and Rockbox are two entirely separate projects and we don't actually supply any supported method of bootloader installation whatsoever.

It isn't obvious, I admit, but this is why you need to specifically enable unsupported devices in Rockbox Utility to even update, and we provide no means of bootloader installation or removal.

I know that this is old. But maybe it can help some people
There is a way...
i saw someone modded the build to have the PC handle the iPod not as an IPod but as a storage device...
I use this build and it works perfect with my Win7:

I'm now hosting a daily build of (vanilla) Rockbox for the iPod Classic with the USB Vendor and Product IDs changed to 0x123A and 0x456B respectively, which aren't currently assigned.

Here's the corresponding patch:
