This is getting ridiculous!
« on: June 23, 2006, 09:13:35 PM »
Hey guys, another rockbox n00b here...

I know everyone has done this already, but at the beginning of installation, it says to use command prompt in order to find your iPod (ipodpatcher 0, ipodpatcher 1, etc...)

I'm at ipodpatcher 330 and still haven't found the iPod. Is this normal? How long should I expect to be doing this?

P.S. at ipodpatcher 0 it says "Drive is not an iPod, aborting" and that's the closest I got

I'm sorry if this question's been asked a million times before but I just couldn't find a thread with this topic

Thanks a million guys ;D

Really you shouldn't ever need to go past 26.

Is your iPod showing up as a disk drive?

Then that would be why. It needs to be in disk mode for this to work.

It *should* just show up as a removable disk when you first plug it into the computer. If you're using iTunes, don't eject it from itunes.

I'd like to add that neither my iPod nor my girlfriend's showed up "as a harddisk" in Windows after installing iTunes, unless in iTunes the following option was also ticked:

Edit/Preferences/iPod/"Enable Disk Use"

(both 5g but given the hardware similarities I wouldn't be surprised if this applies to nano too)

Hmm i think your computer is broken try reinstall itunes
or try system restore back to when your computer reconized your ipod
or ctrl+alt+del and close ituneshelper and ipodservice.exe
or (did you make sure you restarted your computer)
or... i ran out of ideas.... :o

For questions regarding your computer reconizing your ipod should be posted at the apple forums. Trust me you will get more help on this situation if you post your question there. It's a matter of seconds before you get a reply.

Take Care
Jon

I don't think he's having trouble getting the iPods to show up.  He's saying that there is a setting (that you can access via iTunes) that tells the iPod to connect as a UMS device.  It could be that the default for this varies with different (Apple) firmware versions.

With iTunes installed, yes, the "enable disk use" setting must be checked. I believe the iTunesHelper.exe or iPodService.exe programs are what cause this, as it even occurs when iTunes is not opened.

This applies to both Windows and Mac.

I would guess that it's iPodservice that causes it.  Well, I always make sure that is set that way anyway.  I don't know why you would ever want it unchecked.
