Sansa Clip Zip trouble with USB connection.
« on: November 25, 2014, 06:48:02 PM »
I just got a Clip Zip, and loaded Rockbox Stable 3.13

Everything seemed to be working fine (have used rockbox for years on sansa products), but having a strange issue with usb.  Note that this seemed to be working well  for the first day or two.

I  connect to my Windows 7  , rockbox appears, and then the connect Icon appears normally, but the drive(s) are not accessable.  In  Windows   devices & printers screen, it shows 3 SANSA Clip Zip icons .  I believe only the Rockbox device should be showing, not these Original firmware devices.

Removing the USB cable leaves the SANSA clip in a hung state.  So looks like it's not interfacing with USB well at all.

I rebooted Windows yesterday and it working on a fresh boot. So I don't know what's hosed here, Windows or rockbox or both?.

Booting from the SANSA firmware works correctly, drives are visible.  Only rockbox not working.

I was going to try a development  build , but it's not clear to me how to install that, overwrite the existing .rockbox or some other method?

That or use the installer.  Makes no difference.

Just overwrote with the latest dev build, and so far so good.

Strange this issue does not seem to have been reported, or at least I couldn't find it.

I have been having the same problem with a Sansa Clip+ and Windows 7 on my desktop computer, but no problems on my laptop running windows 7!!

Removing the Clip+ in  Devices and Printers, then reconnecting usually doesn't work, but did on one occasion yesterday. Maybe I tried a reboot before reconnecting, but I don't remember. I am connecting to a USB3 socket on my desktop because that is all I have unused.

I'll try the latest  dev build.

FAIL!

New files loaded to the Clip+ with the latest dev build ALL have audio drop-outs, i.e. complete loss of sound for about half a second every so often.

Please ignore the last post.

The problem with audio drop-outs is not to do with the latest dev build.

I reloaded 13.3 and that also had drop-outs with the same music files (erased then reloaded in 13.3). Those files played fine in Windows on my desktop.
A search suggests that this problem is due to Rockbox having a less tolerant flac decoder than VLC media player.

Try re-encoding your files FLAC->FLAC using the latest version.

Which dev build worked for you? I'd been running the stable march 2013 build and was having a few problems with the USB connection, so decided to switch to the latest build (1bc964, 22 Dec) ... and that was a disaster, giving Code 10 (device cannot start) errors in device manager.

Ok, well the 22 Dec dev build was a failure, so I tried the 30 Nov dev build (8618f2c) - that also failed. I got the <device connect> sound followed also instantly by the <device disconnect> sound, and dev manager showed a non-functioning WPD File System device. So I gave up on dev builds and rolled back to 3.13 stable - that worked as well as it did before tinkering. It's far from perfect (the screen has to be on when you plug in the USB otherwise it won't connect, and windows takes a couple of minutes of refreshing for the drives to appear in the filesystem), but it does at least work.

Sorry, I have only just seen the question!

Dev build 8618f2c worked for me.

Thanks for the tip - I'll try re-encoding the FLAC files.

Hmm, clearly the dev build USB connection is working for others. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't on the PC end as the connection works fine for stock FW and works, albeit slowly, with the stable release. So maybe there's some issue with my installation of rockbox?

I did the initial install (including bootloader) using the utility, and switched to the dev builds by just overwriting the contents of the .rockbox directory. Was that right? Is there any debug info I could get that might help me work out why the dev builds are failing?

It seems to randomly have trouble with certain PCs.  I doubt there is anything you can do about it.

I'm glad to say that this problem is fixed in the current development build (f145660-150410 11 April). Nothing has changed on my PC, so clearly the devs isolated the bug in the firmware and fixed it (which is great, as there's been two years of development since the March 2013 stable build). Interestingly, it's still slow to load up in explorer when plugged into the PC, but that's not really a problem.
