iPod video 5 keep rebooting
« on: November 25, 2014, 04:53:28 PM »
I can't get the rockbox to start on my device it enters an endless cycle of rebooting, as soon as the menu appears it reboots, also I noticed that the battery shows dead even when I know it's 100% charged, it reboots thu even when connected to a charger. any help?

I would reboot into the Apple diskmode and restore the device with iTunes.  Then go from there.

I restored it just before I load rockbox to start clean, It won't even go to disc mode as it just keeps rebooting and shutting down, it won't stay on rockbox menu so I can put it in disc mode. It keeps thinking the battery is low after 3 shutdowns it says battery is too low and so on, Man I just lost an ipod.

update:
I was able to get it to go into disc mode and restored it with itunes and the battery showed 100% charge. but upon rebooting from the restore now the ipod reboots to apple logo and shuts down indicating the battery is too low, never had a problem with the battery, Looks like rockbox infected the ability of the ipod to detect the battery charge state, any suggestions on how to repair the firmware?

Sorry, but that sentence makes no sense at all.

If you restore an ipod with itunes, there are no traces of rockbox left on it.

The symptoms you describe match pretty well to worn out battery. Li-ions/lipos behave like this - the voltage is ok as long as you don't start draining current (and spinning up hdd takes a lot of current) then it drops drastically.

It was full when I started the procedure and never disconnected the USB cable from the iPod I don't understand why the battery drops to zero. But lets just assume that's true, why the battery is not charging anymore I left it on the charger for over 24 hrs.

Ok, I opened up the iPod and disconnected the hard drive and hooked up the USB cable it loads triangle mark next to iPod icon with apple website on the bottom (because no HDD detected offcourse) and then shuts down saying the battery is very low, and keeps doing the same cycle over and over, But when the USB cable is not connected it just cycles between apple logo and apple website with triangle next to iPod icon and in few seconds goes blank and when I hit the center button it does the same cycle and never displays battery very low message tried that several times the battery never died. I connected the USB cable again and it displayed apple logo and battery very low message, I will leave it connected for few hours without hard drive and see how it goes.

It didn't charge anything its been displaying very low battery for the whole time, I didn't see the need to go longer than this, I connected the hard drive back and after several tries I was able to defeat the low battery warning message and put it in disc mode iTunes detected it and displays everything as normal, but I went ahead and restored again and after reboot goes back to the same cycle apple logo and very low battery warning, I still have the iPod cracked open if anyone wants to give me a suggestion before I toss it the trash can.

I managed to get it into disc mode again showing battery logo on top right corner full black with spark logo attached to it I will leave it for a while like this see if it clears the battery state detection error and report back.

Update:
While on disc mode I loaded rockbox and was able to start it and displays USB cable LOGO the battery jumped up from 60% to 100% within few seconds I left it charging for few more minutes and disconnected USB cable, The ipod rebooted and rockbox started at the menu showed battery logo empty and shuts down, plugged usb again rockbox loaded menu in USB mode and showed battery at 60% and bar moved up quickly to 100% within few seconds, disconnected USB again reboots and so on the same cycle. Plugged up the USB to an external charger to get rid of the USB logo, rockbox started but going to any of the menu items and click on it iPod shuts down. That was a quick destruction of the ipod the good news is I only paid $60 for it, I will just get an android player I guess to be able to play my FLAC library and that was the raison for trying to install rockbox on the iPod.

Like wodz said above, it sounds like a worn out battery.

The battery worked just fine before installing rockbox and even after installing it showed 100% on rockbox menu in few occasions only when I select a menu item the ipod shuts down, it's a no brainer a bug got introduced to the ipod battery management software, no need to stick up for the software we all know it's a "use at your own risk" policy, it is my fault using it and I'm not blaming anybody. I could spend twenty bucks and get a new battery to prove it, but I just don't have any more patience to go any further, I will use that $20 towards a FLAC portable media player. Thank you all for the help.

That sounds exactly like a worn out battery, but if its actually a bug, you can just reboot into the Apple firmware and charge there.

Under iTunes screen battery is 100% charged, Under rockbox screen battery is 100%.
