Rockbox for unbricking a cowon player?
« on: November 19, 2014, 05:29:50 AM »
Hello Everyone. I was recently trying to unbrick a Cowon M2 player using the official firmware via tcctool, though I was unsuccessful. So I was wondering if there is a method to upload some kind of a generic rockbox firmware to the device... The problem is that I formatted the device using the windows format tool, and it ended up turning off half-way through the boot screen whenever I try to power it up or connect it to a pc... I am actually able to successfully upload the official firmware by accessing the device on usb mode via tcctool, though installing the official firmware has to continue after the device mounts, so I was wondering if anyone knows any kind of tool or method that allows me to fully install any kind of firmware via usb mode, so that I can at least mount the device properly on windows, and do a proper format. Or at least some kind of tool that allows access to the device memory via pc so that I can just format it directly without uploading a firmware! I am truly sorry if some of you might find that this might not be the proper forum for this kind of inquiry, it's just that I've seen some people on these forums talking about similar problems, and this is one of the few places that seem to have people who have a lot of useful knowledge for this kind of problem. I have been googling for 2 days straight looking for solutions... And I managed to brick this player on the same day I got it! It's my first cowon device, and my first lossless music player, and I never got to use it! I live in Egypt, and there are no cowon service centers here! Sending it oversees, in addition to the repair fees, would cost me more than the player itself! I tried tcctool on win 7 and xp, same results... I'm a windows user, but I often use ubuntu, and am willing to do any kind of studious work for building linux libraries, maybe someone can at least give me a hint on what to do!

Thanks a lot for reading my inquiry. I hope it's not bothering anyone...

There is no such thing as generic rockbox firmware. Rockbox has to be ported to particular platform (i.e the drivers for screen, buttons, usb and such must be written). From your post it is not clear if you were successful uploading original firmware with tcctool or not.

Well tcctool says in the cmd that the upload was successful... And right after it finishes the player restarts in order to start installing the firmware, however the cowon m2 has to boot even in order to be mounted, so without mounting, I can't add the rest of the firmware files, which have to be added to the player root, at least that's the common method... I was just wondering if there's a method to fully install all the firmware files through tcctool, or any other tool that I don't know of...
