I need a new mp3 player.
« on: November 16, 2014, 02:27:53 PM »
I tried an iPod touch (3rd generation), but it had tiny capacity and caused me to hate Apple.
I tried a Sansa Clip+ with a 32 gigabyte micro sd card, but its load times were irritating.
I loaded the Rockbox firmware and it was FANTASTIC, but the player became bricked (it did fall into a pool, but it worked for months afterwards).
I bought another Sansa Clip+, with the same micro sd card, but I outgrew it.
I bought a 64 gigabyte micro sd card, but the player wouldn't support it.
I formatted it with FAT32, and it became very slow, but the player accepted it. However, the load times went from irritating to unbearable.
I loaded the Rockbox firmware again (and again, my player was fantastic), and a matter of weeks later, my new player was bricked.

Now, I need a new music player, and a Clip+ with Rockbox was utterly perfect for me, except that my players kept dying. I don't think I can settle for much less in terms of music formats supported, sound quality, capacity, and overall user-friendliness, but I'm concerned that Rockbox is killing my players.

Like I said, my first Clip+ did fall in a pool (chlorinated, if it makes a difference), which is a valid excuse for my hardware failing, possibly months after the incident, and perhaps my second Clip+ was just an unfortunate accident, but my friend, who introduced me to Rockbox, had an old iRiver player that was also bricked after installing Rockbox (not immediately, but after months of use). So, my questions are:

  • Is Rockbox dangerous to install on an mp3 player? If not then
  • Am I doing something wrong? Any tips about the Clip+ specifically?
  • Would I be a sucker if I bought a third Rockboxed Clip+?
  • If so, could anyone suggest a player with decent sound quality, 64Gb+ storage, and supports ogg and aac?

Thanks in advance.

I doubt it. Many people have been using Rockbox for years.

I do not think Rockbox is dangerous to install on mp3 player. I've been using RB on Sansa Fuze+ for more than 3 years without problems. And also iRiver H120 and H140 without any problems.

It is hard to say, why your second Clip+ has died, the first one is quite clear case (the pool). Generaly, devices fail. And I have a strong feeling that they fail deliberately, by design. It does not require any magic abilities to arrange passing away soon after the warranty ends, from producers.
