I just tested and hitting play does toggle play/pause.

I don't think its different.

Your play key toggles the play and pause, just as it is supposed to.

My play key opens the unwanted Pitch Screen.

So how can you say they are not different?

Neil Parks:
I thought maybe there was something in my installation that might somehow have gotten corrupted, so I used RB Utility to completely uninstall Rockbox, switch back to plain Sansa, and then re-install Rockbox--keeping the pdf manual open in another window to make sure I was doing everything by the book.

Guess what the Play button does now!

Give up?  OK, I'll give you a hint:
IT OPENS THE "PITCH SCREEN"!
