Philips HDD1830 unsupported for the most recent iteration?
« on: October 30, 2014, 12:48:55 PM »
Hello,

I've dug up and repaired a bunch of Rockbox players in hopes to generate some battery benchmarks for the most recent Rockbox iterations, but I'm having issues with the HDD1830 with the most recent firmware.

The only thing functioning in the recent firmware is the touchpad lighting up when touched. The previous version I've had on it was 575d00e-130324.

Does anyone else have issues with their HDD1830?

I have the HDD1630. It's basically the same as yours only yours have a 8GB hdd instead of 6GB. It works with the current version: e3cc0ca-141022. So i suspect that you have some hardware problem or something is messed up on hdd. You can try to reinstall Rockbox.

i'm a developer who did a lot of stuff for these players (i mean Portal Players including this one). The battery on this target is not calibrated at all and the algorithm is wrong too. I have this DAP on my TODO list, i'll try to fix this in the future and  revise all the power management stuff for it.

Reinstalling the current iteration of Rockbox didn't help, but I rolled back to the previous firmware and it's back up again. I made sure I wasn't using the cached install from the rockbox utility software. Could there be some minor hardware differences that might be causing this?

The bootloader loads up and the rockbox splashscreen does show up initially, but after that, the screen blanks out.

How do I go about reformatting the hard drive? Is the firmware installed to the drive as well? I can dive into the device for hardware information if you like.

Also, thanks for the heads up on the battery issue. I'll not run a battery benchmark on it yet.

Now I'm puzzled. Indeed, the service manual doesn't mention about HDD1830, i hadn't noticed that before, so in theory can actually be some hardware differences, but on the other hand, it worked before, so the player should not differ from each other.

Formatting a disk is a good idea, and if that does not work, then it must be a change that I made in the code in the period between the two versions. But it would be very strange for me, cause IIRC i haven't changed anything critical, except the LCD code.

EDIT:
I compared OF downloaded from the manufacturer's website for HDD1630 and HDD1830. Both files are exactly the same, which means that players should also be exactly the same. So I don't know really how is it possible that it works on mine DAP and it doesn't on yours. LCD code in OF is the same for both.

I did a clean install and reformatted the device and it is working with the newest update now. I have a feeling there might have been some theme incompatibility from the previous version.

Sorry for putting you on the spin there and thanks for the troubleshoot.
