Can rbutil UPDATE current install of unstable port?
« on: October 07, 2014, 05:04:58 PM »
... or do I have to restore my Samsung Yepp (YH-820MC) and do a clean install?
Asking because it took a several attempts to make dual boot working with current install.

Additionally, a BUG: rbutil does not know what there are no manual for my player's port yet and all manual functions ends up with 404 error.

If your device is listed in rbutil, then yes it can update it.

I don't understand the part about restoring.

I don't understand the part about restoring.
I mean: restore some "clean" state, like pre-Rockbox or factory etc, so subsequent automated install will not create a mess...

... but it doesn't matter if rbutil can sense previously installed packages and do non-destructive update. Thanks!
It is important for me, as current Rockbox version has no FM-tuner support, while OF does.

It may sound weird, but contrary to Samsung YH-XXX wiki page my YH-820MC actually packs FM-tuner hardware.

It is understandable that a user  may not be aware of this fact, but the installation process for Rockbox itself is incredibly simple.

The complicated part of the installation on targets where we operate as a full firmware replacement is the bootloader, and generally speaking that process must only be done once, except for the very rare times when we push a change out that actually requires an updated bootloader.

Updating the Rockbox binary with Rockbox Utility isn't doing anything that you yourself couldn't do manually with relative ease should you desire to do so, but it does offer some handy aspects like automatic device mountpoint detection. All the Rockbox binary installation is doing is extracting an archive to the root of the device, overwriting the original files, leaving system generated files (various configuration files for system and plugins) intact. No user generated files are touched.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

That's, in the essence, what I was asking about, thanks!

Actually, my target entering rbutil support was exciting mostly because a bootloader. I tried to install it manually once and dual boot didn't work for me. But now Rockbox rocks on my player, yay!
